PuliKdiaH EDITORIAL Pax Americana It was late in a Septemlier evening when Kitty Genovese, a young barmaid, hurried up the steps and out of the subway terminal in Brooklyn. The streets were deserted, and as she hastened to her home, the rhythmic click of the heels of her shoes echoed off the brownstone buildings. As she neared her home, the sound of her footsteps was interrupted by heavier and quicker footsteps. Her heart skipped a beat as she quickened her pace. The footsteps drew closer soon someone was running. Panic now struck her as die began to run. Within seconds an unknown assailant was upon her, savagely stabbing and slashing as she screamed for help and pleaded for mercy. For thirty minutes her cries went unheeded as faceless eyes peered from behind drawn drapes viewing this bestial scene. The man fled the scene, his hands crimson and his clothes splattered with blood. The sobs of Kitty could be heard as die dragged herhand over hand, up the steps of an apartment house. self, Her dying body reddened the ground in a grim reminder d acts which had been committed. On her of the knees she pounded on the door, crying, sobbing, Please, wont someone help me? The faceless eyes had no ears. The assailant returned! With brutish, fiendish strength he completed his murderous acts. Kitty was deadl After being notified the police were at the scene in two minutes. But for fifty minutes thirty-eigpeople, who witnessed the crime, did nothing. Why? they didn't want to get involved. People were shocked at the apathy of these these innocent From outward appearance these were good, honest, moral people who knew right from wrong, but for some unknown reason, not apathy, a psychological conflict occurred which rendered them inactive. They witnessed a real emergency, but suffered conflicting feelings of wanting to help, being afraid of attack, and also dreading embarrassment, should the situation turn out to be less dangerous than it seemed. In our calloused, shockproof society, complacency, the dont get involved attitude, has taken on new and sinister meanings. In the quest for peace and pleasure we have become a nation of inveterate spectators, One of the most interesting and attractive mineral forms a found in Utah is the geode rock with an spherically-shape- d agate lining and quartz crystals. Solid type geodes are called The nodules or thunder-eggmethod of formation of geodes is not known for certain. Known throughout the U.S. as Dugway geodes, they occur in great aliundance cm the western side of the Dugway Mountain Range of Tooele and Juab Counties, Utah. They were probably formed during the middle Tertiary Period (approximately 40 million yean ago) when lava ' flows were common occurences in this area of Utah and southern Idaho. When cooled many of these lava flows formed rhyolite rock which has the greatest silica content of the normally encountered lavas. Associated with many lava flows are gas or steam cavities resulting from releases of gaseous materials. When the lava cools many cavities remain in what now is rhyolite rock. This is the first stage in the geode sightseen. We throng to the stadiums, crowd around the television, and stand in long lines at the movies or theatre to fill our lives with vicarious thrills and violence without ever having to lift a hand to help. We no longer react to help our neighbor; psychologically we are not equipped to react kinetically without the aid of group approval. The Pax Rom ana brought many blessings to ancient Rome; it made possible the greatest luxury, the most active commercial life, and the mast leisure time for workers that the world had ever seen up to that time. So it is with Pax Americana Peace in America. We are in a mounting craze for pleasure and brutalization. Howard Whitman states that when a nation has become pleasure seeking, history has already begun its epitaph. We are rapidly developing a love of brutality in a craving for sensuality in ensports, even demanding it and we are proliferating every media to tertainment satisfy our desires. Just like the Romans, watching the gory spectacles in the arenas and Circus Maximus, our young people are learning nothing but contempt for human life and dignity. An almost unbelievable avalanche of sex, perversion, pornography, blue films, sadism, masochism, bestiality, murder, rape, and brutality flood into view through motion pictures, stage productions, sporting events, and lurid magazines and pulp novels as viewers passively look on. Is it any wonder that Kitty died? Her death was nothing more than a of occurrences seen by us a hundred or even a thousand times before. During my tenure at Dugway, I have had many opportunities to talk to several residents of our community concerning residents of our community concerning violations which have occurred. Some of these violations have been major and could be a prelude to more grieveous crimes if not stopped. Again, however, a resounding cry has been heard I dont want to become involved. We must stand up and lie come doers. We must have beliefs and set goals and then actively pursue these goals. We must condition ourselves to react to suffering and to despise atrocities more than we love ourselves. If we fail in this our applause in the realms of pleasure will lie mingled with the groans of the dying and die battle cries of those vandals that will surely besiege our nation when they see our weakness and moral decay. Quartz is absorbed making die rhyolite stronger particularly along the outer faces of the cavity making the cavity a separate sphere. This generally culumanates the formation of the geodes. The geode now must be freed from the surrounding matrix of rhyolite rock. This is accomplished simply through erosion. Geodes can be found in gravtls and sands as well as in desintegrated rhyolite which is pink and white clay. In other words, some can be found in their place of origin and some have liecn transported by water to other locations. It must lie remembered that these Dugway geodes were covered by the waters of Lake Bonneville after their formation. The chemical and mechanical actions of this water undoubtedly destroyed many, transported some, and caused calcarious material and debris to fill cavities of others. These geodes vary widely from place to place at the Dugway location. Some are solid agate (nodules), some are filled with quartz f inch long, crystal up to some have amethyst crystals, some have bands iff agate and crystals, while some even have a solid center composed of a common type opal. Similar types of geodes have been found in Nevada, Oregon, California, and a much different geode is found in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and other states. Geodes in these areas are formed within cavities in shale and limestone. The formation process is percolation of ground water into the rock depositing various types of minerals within the cavities. Calcium carbonate is often the common mineral which results in calcite-line- d cavities. Caverns with their large formations of stalagmites and stalactites may lie likened to a large one-hal- ever-growin- te ar sudden gust. MRS. KNOWLDEN said die was in another room dose by when she heard the crash. All I could think of was Sheri sitting in front of the window, she said. She stated that her husband was at work and she didnt have a car but called a neighbor who rushed the little glri to the Tooele Clinic. A chicken coop in the yard a short distance from the rear of the Knowlden home was destroyed by the wind. A neighbor, Tony Kruletz, 776 West Vine, said lie and his son were attempting to anchor down a small bam in their own yard when they saw the coop go. That's something you've got to see, Mr. Kruletz said. "It went straight up about six feet, cleared a corral fence taking out a few of the large posts and then sailed out over the open field. It seemed about to go up even higher when suddenly it looked like it exploded as though someone had set off a dynamite blast inside. The broken building was scattered over the field almost a hundred feet from its cement foundation. There were no chickens inside.
