McCutcheon, commanding general of Ogden Air Material Area, Hill COL Robert Muldrow, deputy commander of DTC, BC John C. Appel, commanding general of DTC, and COL Sam Roberts, commanding officer of the Utah Sector Command, US Army Reserve. SERVICE AWARDS Receiving Length of Service Awards in ceremonies held last week were (L-Mike Masoian, Albert Jones and James Quinn. Jones received a 20 year award while Masoian and Quinns award was for ten years service. BG John G. Appel made the presentations. Next week Dugways Communications Officer will end 18 years of employment at Dugway, and 26 years of government service when he retires. Retiring will lie Roland W. Gardner, 69, who came here in 1951, and who was appointed signal officer for Dugway Proving Ground in April, 1955. Mr. Gardner was honored this week by a luncheon attended by COL Lharles M. Shadle, Dugway Post Commander and many friends and associates at Dugway. COL Shadle presented Mr. Gardner a Department of the Army Certificate erf Achievement for the years of valuable service he has rendered to the Federal Government. He was also given a desk pen set as a memento of his years at Dugway, in addition to a suitcase and other items. Mr. Gardner heartily thanked those present at the luncheon, as well as those unable to come and those who over the years had made his stay at Dugway a pleasurable one. I just dont know what 1 would have done without Dugway- and the fine people here, Mr. Gardner remarked. ROLAND GARDNER Union. In VW I he served in France with the American Expeditionary Force. The team opens their season at Notre Dame with 12 returning lettermen as starters. Doctor Theodore O. Downing, Chief Veterinarian for Deseret Test Center, has been with the Center for nearly seven years. His work is in the field of pathology and he is assigned to the Medical and Safety Office at Deseret Test Center Headquarters. Doctor Downing came to Deseret Test Center from the Biophysics Division of the Chemical Research and Development Laboratory at Edgewood Arsenal. Maryland. A graduate of Petersburg High School, Petersburg Virginia, he holds degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His degrees include a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. His interest in humane animal treatment is expressed in his statement on laboratory use of animals, The scientist must have a healthy animal to insure his end product will lie good. To make certain of this he treats his animals with care and kindness. Just as a rancher treats his cattle or sheep well to insure a 1 letter grade of meat or wool for the public the scientist treats his animals well in the publics interest. A retired Army Major, Doctor Downing and his wife, Shirley, live in Salt Lake City. He belongs to many organizations, some of which are: The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, (he is vice president of the Utah chapter,) New York Academy of Science, Scientific Research Society of America and several others.
