The modest monument fixed in the mud flats west of Kaysville is the only one in Utah. Arizona is lucky, said the hitchiking artist, speaking of his next stop, it gets two dots. From Arizona, English is bound for South America, there to lay out a vast letter A stretching from the jungles of Brazil on the north to the coast of Chile on the south. Next will come an R spanning approximately one quarter of the African continent, a T covering most of India, and a final H.in Australia. The ambitious project to label the planet began years ago, when English first spelled the. word wall on a wall, thereby inventing his distinctive art form. From walls, English went bn to label other household objects, including tables and chairs, until he felt ready to tackle the world. To prove that I could do the Earth, last year I labelled England. Welcome to West Wendover Nevada's 'other half' secedes from the Union v by Ken Donoghue, Wendover Bureau Chief A driver making his way from West to East on Interstate 80 will, as he is leaving Nevada and about to cross into Utahs Salt Flats, see the sign pictured here in the SF News. He will probably stop in West Wendover, Nevada, at Jims Casino or the Stateline to gird his loins for the long dry trip across the aridly beautiful Salt Flats. When he leaves West Wendover, he will also probably care nought that he has passed that small spot on this earth where Floyd Eaton, or 'Deputy Dump lives. Although West Wendover seems real enough to our driver passing through it, and it does furnish Eaton with a residence, it really is a dream. While Wendover, Utah, the staider and more sober half of this split community has been a going concern as a town for some time, West Wendover is at present more a hope than reality. The name itself is a dream. To the Elko County Commissioners the places name is Eastline, Nevada. This is the name that appears on maps also. West Wendovers population of thirteen is an arbitrary figure. Most residents are employed at the two casinos. Thus the number of West Wendover fluctuates with employee turnover. They have elected a town advisory board: Jim Smith, of Jims Casino, Gary owner-manag- er of the Julian, owner-managWendover Disposal Company, and Bernard Carlton, idea man. J. Carpenter and S. Sutherland, two Elko County Commissioners, function as ex officio advisors to the above named three. The West Wendover Advisory Board seeks, via the Elko County Commission, to become the unincorporated town of West er Wendover, Nevada. Why? Also because of a dream. Jim Smith says, Here we have a unique chance to build from the ground' up. We have here in West Wendover a smog free area. Nevadas industry is recreation, a smog free one. We and others who wish to join us can grow in an environment that will be free and kept free from those elements that, corrode the quality of life. But this .growth depends upon two things: water and an airport. The United States Air Force has these two Wendover Air Force Base and a functioning water supply that has hardly any. CO-O- P 232 SO.
