Show 9 SALT FLAT NEWS, MAY, 1972 Wendover's Seasonal Citizen Decides to Call It Home by Kenneth Donoghue Used Car Center Whenever you see Jess in town you know that summer is here. Malm Green of Wendover was showing me around the town and we saw Jess sawing some wood in front of his tarpaper shack in downtown Wendover. So we got out of Malins Volkswagen to talk to Jess. Jesse Driscell is his name he told me. He has been coming to Wendover from Salt Lake City every summer for twenty years. He had an established pattern. Winters, Jess spent in Salt Lake working as a common laborer and living in the Dalmacya Hotel. (What dreams of sunny Yugoslavia on the Mediterranean: Dalmacya is the old Roman name of Yugoslavia! ) Summers he came to Wendver, Utah Nevada. I cut weeds for a living, said Jess. But' not this year. This very year that 1 met him for the first time, he had left Salt Lake City forever. He has not left, as I naively suggested, to flee the chronic smog problem of the metropolis to the crystal blue Wendover sky. Oh, no. Theres getting to be too many drunks there. Thats why I left, he told me. Jess was bom sixty-thre- e years He remembers Oklahoma. in ago his mother talking of knowing . Belle Stan, a lady bandit. She told him that one day Belle went into the local bank and started to talk to the bank manager, a Mr. Chandler. Jess let us in to see the Inside of his tarpaper shack, which can be described, Malin Green says, as being one block from the post office. According to Malin, al- though Wendover Streets have names, no one ever uses them. Jess was most proud of his large refrigerator. So Wendover has a new permanent resident, Mr. Jess Driscell, formerly of Salt Lake City. He's going to live on his Social Security and what little he can pick up as a weed cutter and laborer. Rent is a modest twenty dollars a month. And hes all set up to receive mail Bill Richey, mechanic at the Western Garage, allows Jess to receive mail in his box. Jess would like to see Wendover boom. (By moving here he is of course doing his mall share to boom Wendover.) He believes that making the airport available to civilian and military craft would help to boom Wendover.
