Show 10J SALT FLAT NEWS; FEBRUARY 1972 Representatives of the National Hot Rod Association, Bonneville Nationals Inc., and the American Motorcycle Association met with Utahs Governor Calvin L. Ramp-to- n in Los Angeles this week to discuss plans for the preservation of Bonnevilles famed salt flats racing facility. The meeting, which took place at the Ambassador Hotel follow- ing a press reception, was attended by NHR A president Wally Parks, Bonneville Nationals spokesman Burke LeSage and AMAs western referee Earl Flanders. Governor Rampton was in Los Angeles to solicit new industry activities for the State of Utah, with particular emphasis on film and television interests, and promoting Utahs favorable climate and scenic atmosphere for all types of filming and recreational programs. In his discussion with the racing representatives, the Governor confirmed his interest in maintaining Bonnevilles salt flats as an active site and motorcycle speed contests. Now a state park, the salt flats have attained valuable new improvements. Entry routes, parking facilities and other accommodations now af for-aut- o ford tourists easy access to the vast encrusted area in which most of the worlds land speed records have been set over the years. NHRAs concern in seeing that the Bonneville site is maintained was expressed by Parks who, in committee 1949, led a three-ma- n to Salt Lake City and obtained the first use of the salt for the annual Bonneville Nationals events.' Parks was assured by Governor Rampton that Utah had not lost interest in continuation of its annual Speed Week activities which have been produced under the auspices of the Bonneville Nationals Inc., and sanctioned by NHRA, AMA and the Southern California Timing Association. The Utah State Highway Department annually invests thousands of dollars preparing the salt flats for the annual speed trials and for individual record attempts conducted there during the summer season for FLA and . FIM recognition. The 23rd annual Bonneville National Speed Trials, held in late August this year featured 108 cars and 73 motorcycles. Fred Larsen of LaHabra, Calif., set the top speed of 276.07 mph in the Larsen and Cummings Class D streamliner.
