Show Salt Lake County, Utah Wrdnesituy. Nor. 14, IS 62 The Neighbor Page 2 urDiises! There Is A Better Way Right after election there is always a big fuss alxTit buying some kind of voting machine or counting equipment in order to sjmhhI up the process and make it nine accurate. But the next electiun is then two years off. equipment is expensive, and after considerable talk and S3 action the whole thing is forgotten until it is too late do anythuig about it. Voting machines are so bulky as to creale a storagf problem between elections, so heavy that moving them k expensive and unwieldy, so huge they are impractical for many voting places so expensive they put the county in hock for years to come, and have been proved subjct to tampering. Salt I.ake (icmnty tried a few of them a couple of years ago and sent them bark. What sounds bet ter is an electronic tabulating system to tally the vole after Is has lieen cast by electors. Bakersfield. Calif., has Irani such a system, known as the (ioleman vote tabulating system; there are probably others. Bakersfield ivjxuifd that the system tallied more than 92.000 bid lots in 6 hours SO minulps. In the June primary the county required almost two days to count the vote from the same precincts. Last week some Salt Lake County voting districts required until (i a.m. to finish their tabulations. With clerks allowed a maximum to complete their work, it is an imposition upon them and upon those who must tally the totals as they come in fmm the various districts. If this system is as gwnl as the officials at Bakersfield it is. Salt Lake County should put' it in effect before say the next election. The electronic pntcess saved Bakersfield an estimated $40,000 in labor costs in just one election.
