No. 53 South Salt Lake News January 1, 1970 Volume-I- I KNAK All Americans r To Challenge c Referees shirts! Faculty members hold on to your try to maintain your sanity! The KNAK All American Basketball Team will continue its campaign to raise funds for local schools by opposing the Granite High faculty in a tilt Jan. 7. We think the games are doing one thing; teaching people the true meaning of sportsmanship, the lack of it, the need for it and, in most cases, the abundance of it on the school level and on the human level. Many people not having gone to school for a few years, including some of us here at the station, say 'basketball, man, I dont want to go out and look like an idiot. But then we stop and hope that others stop for a minute and thing wait: How long has it been since I went to a game and had a great time just laughing and yelling my heart out? And when you have done that, you realize that what were doing is just a little bit of good, nothing more and certainly nothing less, f i i post-holid- ay I i stated Shane. estimated An $15,000.00 will have been raised among numerous area schools when the scheduled games are completed. The DJ squad consists of John Sherman and Paul Freeman, who both play font ard ; Shane and Bobby Mitchell, guards; Gene Davis, who plays defense; and Michael G. who, plays very little. Kavanagh injured his ankle while attempting to scale Mt. Olympus with his rarto collegues. Rounding out the team of All Americans are Ray Harwood (Capitol Records), Al Tores, Bri Shank, Dennis Latrell, Bob Cheney and Buck Ka-vana- gh, Faber. The games take countless hours of work to put together, It isnt just a remakred Shane, case of saying, Well be playing at such and such a school on such We have to and such a date. rearrange commercials, take the time to write and produce promo spots for the schools' PA systems and make promos for our airtime. Then we have to reschedule jocks Faculty so that we can get as many as possible out to fhe games so the people might see them play. That's why people come to the games. Shanes hair length is often the When subject of conversation. Im out and warming up, people only see the long hair and the skinny legs. I must admit it looks a little funny to myself, too. But after the games start, the comments seem to disappear. Usually the people are finding themselves wondering how a hippy with long hair and skinny legs can get rebounds, make plays and sink shots from twenty-fiv- e and thirty feet out. Ooops, gave away my secret. At the end of the game, people come up to me and are really very- nice. If this long hair has been so Important aslo cause them to make a decision regarding the fact that hair is of no importance, it is the man who is wearing it and what he does that is of consequence; it has been worth it. So, I s usually smile and say thank-yo- u when they yell about the hair. But then I would be lying if I said it didnt hurt my feelings. I suppose thats why I play a little harder and foster, just to show them that even though I wear long hair now, I wasnt always this open miDded about people. I used to think that you couldnt play basketball unless you wore short hair and looked cool. Shane has to be KNAKs most valuable player. The station received a letter from Dr. Parker, principal of Highland High, commending the Living Legend for his shooting prowess and all around basketball excellence. The KNAK Real People are noted for their court antics. Whether its stealing an officials striped shirt, emerging from a group with a ladys unmentionables or simply tossing the ball into the stands unexpectedly, the deejays never foil to amuse. We have a special like for Granite, said Shane, and we dont even know why. Perhaps well see Jan. 7. I hope everybody will be there. - Salt Lake City Commission resolution supporting President Nixons Vietnam policy is presented to the President by Utah Congressman Sherman P. Lloyd.
