Show SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 1940 Vol. 14; No. 2 15c per copy $5.00 per year Comm. Chairman Lee Cuts City Costs At First Session The Salt Lake Tribune called it one of the most colorful and unique City Commission meetings ever held. Those citizens who attend ed this first meeting, and helped make it a one, heard the new Mayor, former Governor J. Bracken Lee, enter into some verbal fireworks with some of the members of the Commission. The first order of business was the assignment of posts for the Commission members. Mayor Lee indicated a preference for Finance. Commissioner Ted Geurts spoke up indicating a preference also for the Finance Department. (Mr. Geurts resigned as Commissioner of this department last year) Mr. Geurts held that it was customary for seniority to be considered. Mayor Lee accepted the post of public safety with these words, Til still be chairman of all departments. Maybe this is, working out the best way-anIll need the to police department help me. As Chairman of the Commission, Mayor Lee kicked off the session by saying he didnt think the city should have a paid advertising man and recommended the abolishment of the job. All commissioners consented except Mr. Geurts. Though the new mayor did not object to the proposed sale of the present public safety building, he did feel that it should be sold at public bid instead of just a straight offer to the government for a site for a federal building. He suggested that the sale be done by public jam-pack- ed bid. Mayor Lee Honored at Inaugural Banquet Mayor Lee felt that new ground be found and an option be made for the ground plus estimates as to the (Cont on Page 4 Col. 1) One 'Thousand Hear Lee Promise To Put An End To Wild Spending ...
