Show Friday, November 27y 1959 THE AMERICAN STATESMAN How To Fight COPE YES, BUT! By I. Dohn Lewis (jmge Scardma Logically, people reared in an atmosphere basically compatible with freedom would be expected to recognize socialism under any disguise and resist it for exactly what it is, a political confidence game. Unfortunately, the years since 1932 have wrought, with the aid of politically immoral political party hacks, so many change in our basic system of government, by bureaucratic decree, as to blind the citizenry to what was going on until they believed they were being aided by some magical known formula, as government Mr. Boardman forgetting that government has nothing except what it has taken from others. At a meeting early this year, a question was asked, thus: Q: You continually speak of socialism as If Its a dirty word. You may Be right BUT what are we going to do about Juvenile delinquency. Socialism, foreign aid, farm supports and high taxes do not cause Juvenile delinquency. A: Socialism, communism, welfare statism, governmental paternalism are all dependent upon taking from those who earn to support those who do not For instance, the State of Mississippi supposedly supports a penal institution in which connubial visits are permitted, resulting offspring frequently added to the state welfare rolls. For taxes collected by the Federal government from citizens of that State, the government returns more than 100. Some portion of your taxes help support the results of connubial visits by wives with their husband prisoners. You may find it touching to learn that small fry accompanying the mother find company in the presence of other prisoners who act- as baby sitters. Cant you just hear a couple of young sons, of a prisoner going home after the visit to excitedly announce to the neighborhood, Oh Boy, Brass Knuckles Willie was our baby sitter today." If we face the fact that a fairly high percentage of people serving time in penal institutions enjoy the security and hospitality of an institution because they tried to get something for nothing, the evil suggestions of the socialist philosophy become obviously apparent Since the socialist government takes from the earner for the benefit of those who do not or will not earn, after taking a nice slice from the top. the cut for the government why not cut out the middleman (the government) and steal the money - On October 23rd the American Progress Foundation, sponsoring the passage of the 23rd Amendment which would repeal the personal income tax and get the gov-- : eminent out of competition with business, held panel discussions on the subject at Chicago. Prominent Texans participating in three of these panels were Dr. E. E. Anthony, Jr., of Fort Worth; of the panel on health; Mr. Robert E. Nesmith, of Houston, of the panel on Land, and Finance; and Evetts Buildings Haley, Jr., Canyon,, participant in the panel on Agriciulture. In summarizing the conclusions of the Health Panel discussion, Dr. Anthony, member of the National Policy Committee, For America, along with Dr. Thomas Parker, Greenville, S. C., his insisted that the repeal of the income tax must be the main issue in 1960 because: Continued unlimited federal power to tax and spend will de an an an Ctferitnaii BE 'j Problem : RIGHT WAY STUBBORN-TH- E As effective as COPE (Commit- straight from the source? It was just about a year ago when we read of a committee which appeared to be traveling a course designed to make an absolute mockery of welfare statism. This committee was a subsection (and still is) of a welfare committee involved also with the mental health program and its purpose in life was to investigate LEISURE TIME. This committee is hell bent on spying so-call- ed into the leisure time activities of the citizenry because it is quite possible for leisure time to be spent in activities which might not be compatible with the committee. In addition, the committee will discover what is being done in leisure time, why what ever is being done appeals to those having leisure time and will plan and channel the leisure time of the people into the grooves of togetherness which the committee finds most useful to the community as a whole. This, too is socialism, welfare statism, paternalism. You may have another name or a variety of names which might apply and you may be, as I am, concerned with the amount of leisure time which such people appear to have and you may remember some adage you heard as a child about idle hands and form a committee to find ways and means to help these poor people (the committee on leisure time). You may also want to investigate the possibility that the children of the members of this committee are not getting the attention they deserve, or the affectionate care. In the Communist-sociali- st schemes for things to come, the responsibility of each separate citizen (slave) is limited to his or her responsibility to the omnipotent State, the State assuming his responsibility to offspring, family, initiative and his own idividuality. The irresponsible either accept their bondage in a spirit of cooperation or lie down,: still grumbling. Today1, a young woman of thirty may receive as much as $300.00 a month just because she has born a ' half dozen illegitimate children from one or a half dozen mates while those mates go blithely on heir wav knowing the government will pay the freight With this background of irresponsibility, how responsible will this young woman feel towards the education and training of her children? The next logical step, in the welfare State - Communist - Socialist pattern is for the state to recognize the unfortunate situation and take over the complete care and education and. training of those children and then yours and yours and yours. - TEXANS Page 3 tee on political education of the has been in the last few years it is not a huge organization. COPE divides the country into about 12 districts. Then these districts are subdivided. All year long there are traveling teams who go into each district with films on how to win an election. One of the films is an on the spot record of a Wisconsin election. It is expertly produced and does a fine job. But when you stop and think for a moment, the number and effectiveness of the conservatives in the United States far outweigh, numerically the COPE mar film. Conservatives do not tithe their members as does the labor movement which in turn takes part of the union dues and gives it to h Hang AFofL-CI- O) COPE. But the conservative movement has magazines and newspapers such as the American Statesman which are subscribed to by thousands of patriotic Americans from coast to coast These papers are the vital lines of communication among the conservatives. An examination by states shows that the conservatives are concentrated most heavily in Illinois, New York,' California and most states in the South. It has been estimated that there are roughly five million conservatives in America. This is an effective fighting force. Lets use this powerful force to put conservatives into public office. The paper you are now ' reading is a political action weekly with national distribution. It can help you elect conservatives. You select men who believe as you do and see that they are placed on Republican, Democrat or Independent tickets. When this has been done tell us about it We will help. When you have your man on the ticket we will publish a story about . him with the committee names and addresses so that other conservatives in your state can contact them and help. Now you are an ardent conservative. Why dont you find two more who feel as you do and see that they subscribe to the American Statesman? Send their subscriptions to the American Statesman to my attention. The time is NOW to prepare for the 60 elections. Send in the subscriptions as soon as you can. If you want a striking example of the difference between Communism and Americanism . . . stop and think how the Communists treat political opponents in their country. 7. Farmers For America Panel With Tom Anderson, the magnificent patriot who publishes Farm and Ranch, and rugged Dan Hanson, cowman from Kaycee, Wyoming, moderating the agriculture panel, the rebel wheat growers of the' national council of Farmers for America all but took over with devastating attacks on the AAA program. Clifford Simpson and John Donaldson of Ohio, Ethan Stangland of Indiana, and Evetts Haley, Jr., of Texas all prominent , in Farmers for America, led the attack. They were ably supported by. farmers from other sections. Dan Hanson, throwing his tremendous influence into the Farmers For America movement, read statement to the their hard-hittin- g general convention, which declared: Repeal the income tax so as to curb inflation, restore States Rights, abolish federal controls, set the farmer free, recover his recapture his markets at home and abroad, and honest abundance for all.
