In fact, just a little common sense would be a wonderful thing and I might give you the answer which I gave to a young college student, when he stated to me that we had a number of socialistic programs prior to the 16th Amendment This I recognize to be a fact and I think perhaps that there is a little bit of socialism in everyone. But in order to retain our Constitution, which incidentally is the most modem, prodocument known to man, gressive we should eliminate the 16th Amendment and then let the government practice all the socialism it can afford to with the $37 billion it has left Col. 1) fix a flat tire. He would have to call a service station and have ft done commercially. Do you believe that this would save the Government money? 11. Examples like the preceding question could be multiplied by the hundreds. Many commercial firms are in the business of leasing and renting vehicles, buildings, office machines, etc. Therefore, obviously the amendment would prohibit the Government from owning vehicles, buildings, office machines, etc. Is this rally the intent of the Amendment? If not; how are you going to get around the very rigid language which the amendment contains? up-to-da- te, Complete Socialism In other words, if the government is limited in the amount of money it has to spend, it cannot have too much socialism. But with the unlimited powers to tax, as permitted by the 16th Amendment it can and will have eventually complete socialism. You are, by my standards, an extremely wealthy man. But you can see that if you and men like you, who have permitted loopholes in which you can avoid paying a tax, that the rest of the American people must pay, and promoted an increase in salary for yourself, as well as a pension far beyond that granted to others, the people will before long, rise up and take away from you all that you now own. You personally have far more at stake financially than I do and many others who can see the dangers of this 16th Amendment For your own personal good, I think you better get on the side of those of us who truly believe in the free enterprise system and the return of constitutional government where the government is the servant of the people and not their master. The Amendment also prohibits the government from engaging in any professional activities. Since there are atin torneys private practice, the government would have to have all of its legal work done by law firms, Instead of hiring its own attorneys (including even the Attorney General). Because there are private auditing firms, the government could not' hire its own accountants, and would have to abolish flm office of the Comptroller General and the General Accounting Office. Because private companies own forests and operate them successfully the Forest Service would have to be abolished. Because private hospitals and doctors in private practice, the government. would not be allowed to continue to operate the Veterans Administration Hospitals to take care of the soldiers who have been injured in combat. 12. . . I think there is no question but what the language of the amendment applies in each of these cases and countless more. So the next question is, do you really intend that the BRACKEN LEE Cut all-inclus- amendment should have this effect? If not, how would you change the language to permit exceptions where such exceptions obviously would save the taxpayers money? LEE on TV EVERY SATURDAY In answer to your statement number twelve, I feel that this is just another one of those little items which are out to confuse the people and I will reply to you again I am not interested in any argument that is going to continue to deprive me of my honest earnings or my freedom. I am merely interested in an argument that will cut this government down to a reasonable size where the people will once more have something to say about how it is run. Douglas finds that 914,247 hold permits to buy at the commissary stores. Of this total, only 169,730 live on the posts. The balance, or somewhere around 80 of all the permit holders live off the post, where they have access to privately operated food stores. - Cites Lee Dangerous COPES Political Memo concluded with the statement that He (Lee) is very, very dangerous, declaring: Lee, among other things, is opposed to the graduated income tax; thlnka President Elsenhower is a socialist; says that Union memers should not have National or International Unions; claims that America should engage in a preventive war; proposes that the UA give up its seat in the United Nations to Communist China and believes that 'Social Security is a fraud. Except for the reference to the Lee Mayor-ele- ct would like to see repealed, his associates said, COPES statement of Lees position on the other issues is typical of attempts to distort his views and is not worthy of comment As a matter of fact, COPES statement sounds suspiciously like Jenkins utterances, campaign they said, Perhaps they came from the same source. left-winge- e As anyone in the food business knows, a store that does a mil- Thus, the question becomes ry even more perplexing.
