State Salt Lake City 11, Utah VoL 13; No. 44 Friday, November 13, 1959 i Comeback for Bracken Lee New York Daily News Nov. 6, 1959 Governor of Utah and longtime battler against the federal income tax and for economy in government has been pretty much in the political shade of late. It looked for a while as if he were about done for as a politician. From Mayor To Senator? In Tuesday's election, though, Mr. Lee, running as an independent candidate, got himself triumphantly chosen Mayor of Salt Lake City. If assorted Utah political cards fall in his favor, Lee is likely to be elected U. S. Senator from Utah on the Republican ticket in 1962. We earnestly hope this may come to pass. As a fierce and Lee would be as resourceful enemy of the useful a man as any state could send to the Senate. J. Bracken Lee, former spend-and-spende- rs, ' Public Should Demand Tax Cut Burley Herald Bulletin We were discussing taxes with a fellow editor today, and he remarked' that Utah's Bracken Lee. says that the federal government could abolish the income tax and still operate efficiently. Come to think of it, 10 years ago the federal government's budget was under 40 billion, so that is true that we possibly could operate without the approximately 40 billion that is grudgingly paid by income taxpayers each year. Isn't that a happy thought? No income tax. .r If it were possible, it would cause the biggest boom in history. It would be a tremendous incentive to create more jobs by people who would be willing to work harder because they could keep what they earned instead of giving most of it to the government. But instead of dreaming about how wonderful such a tiling would be, why don't we do something about it? Why don't we insist to our congressmen that we would rather have fewer services and less taxes? Why don't we have more taxpayer revolts, such as the one started in Washington last year? After all, taxes are our fault. If we insisted that we didn't want to spend more money, that we wanted the government to economize and cut taxes, our representatives would finally become convinced that we meant what we said. The trouble Is that every time one area gets deprived of a little government "pork" they scream to high heaven, and wind up getting their pork . . . and we got more taxes. Taxes are much more of a burden than we realize. They are much more of a detriment to prosperity and a high standard of living than is apparent on the surface. Let's cut a lot of the government frills and cut taxes' on a state level and on a federal level. Our local governments seem to be holding the line pretty well. But our state taxes have gone sky high, and our federal government's budget has doubled. If we don't want high taxes, we don't have to have them. But we ,can't have everything under the sun and cut taxes too. Let's cut out a lot of the luxuries and get taxes back to within reason. (Burley Herald-Bulleti. n) Mr. Lee Rides Again (From the "Evening Star," Washington D.C. An unreconstructed rebel, conservative variety, won an impressive victory in one of this week's local elections. J. Bracken Lee, a former Republican Governor of Utah who seceded from his party several years ago and has been campaigning ever since against big government, big taxes, big spending and big labor, will be the next Mayor of Salt Lake City. Appropriately, Mr. Lee ran this time as an "independent." The vigorous campaign, in which the loser was a young Democrat State Senator, ' brought out a record vote for the city. At 60, Mr. Lee's political potential beyond the attractive confines of Salt Lake City may not be great It is unlikely, however, that this will be the last time he will be making news. As a militant spokeisman for one point of view, at least, he makes a refreshing contribution to the sometimes stereotyped political ' debates of the times. e(g.BIT8D Dear Sirs: The British electorate has voted against the socialist program because it did not prove to be the Utopia expected. The British public had a chance to vote against suspiciously onesided disarmament the lifting of the retaliatory threat that would have delighted the Soviet, It was their chance to vote against the lifting of trade restrictions and the entry of Red China into the community of nations, against fawning concessions to the Commies at the expense of Western defenses and against all new socialist tinkering with economics the productive machine. Even to vote against more welfare schemes. At least the British get a chance to vote on these things. At least system, with they have a two-part- y one conservative party. The and of our Democrat-Republica- n politics has all but formally merged these into one party, and the need for a second, conservative party in is pressing, if the the United States are not to remain disfranchised. It would seem the votes are there for those who would run as re, sponsible conservatives. Sincerely, J.
