In 1870, just twent-thre- e years after the pioneers entered the valley, Utah had written in it's Territorial Constitution a clause giving the women the right to vote. It was not until August 26, 1920 .that the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution gave suffrage to the women. Early in 1899 a group of politically conscious women, loyal to the Republican principles, met at the home of Mrs. Arthur Brown. Each pledged herself to enlist ten women interested in forming a Republican Club for Women. On March 16th of the same year the club was organized with Mrs. Arthur Brown as its first president It was incorporated in 1901 and is the oldest Republican club of record in the United States. In 1921 representatives the Salt Lake club answered a call from the Republican National Committee to organize a National Federation of Womens Republican Clubs, but this organization did not materialize. On September 23-21938, at Palmer House in Chicago a national federation was formed. Utah was represented at this convention by Mrs. Earl A. Davis, of Utah and Mrs. E. O. Leather-woodelegate from the Womens 4, vice-chairm- an d, Republican Club of Salt Lake City. From the minutes of the convention, Mrs. Ovis Evans of Montana made this statement We have started an organization under the sponsor ship of the Republican National Committee to cooperate with the members of the Republican Rational Committee in the various states. The women of the national committee ratified this in conference and approved our going ahead and organizing this national federation of Republicans. The Federation of Womens Republican clubs is the educational and supporting wing of the Republican organization. eaJch 4 (jmtingA a the end of every year At There is a time to pause.
