Here are die facts: 19i TT Congress in the 1958 session enacted specific appropriation items, authorizations and tax reductions involved a total budgetary burden of over $7.5 billion beyond Administration Even after deducting the cuts made in specific appropriation items by Congress mostly in defense and mutual security this produced a net budgetary burden of $5,271,000,000 (See table below.) 1. recom-mendation- In the 2. s. 1958 Congress, vetoes of spending authorizations by the President, and Administration opposition to other appropriations and authorizations that passed one house of Congress, resulted in avoidance of legislation involving an added budgetary burden of over $5.5 billion. The total budgetary cost of just eight major spending proposals by Democrats in the past session is estimated at over 3. ti If affl other unenacted bills cost by Democrats are included, the proposed additional five-yea- r rises to considerably more than the staggering sum of $200 billion. $180 billion over the next five years. 4. The Presidents budget included 16 economy proposals which, if enacted, would have produced future annual savings of $3.5 billion. The Democrat Congress did not act at all on eight of these proposals, acted only partially on four, and decided to spend more rather than save on four other items.
