Pare THE UTAH STATESMAN A Survey Shows How Each State Benefited from Trade with Opening of bids on the big Flaming Gorge project has also seen further activity on the part of Utah road officials. In the interest of coordinating a two-staeffort to make the best possible highway connections to the dam area, a joint g road committee has already been appointed in a joint cooperative move to best serve the two states, both during and after construction of the dam. Commissioners Francis Feltch of Vernal, apd Weston E. Hamilton of Salt Lake City will represent Utah along with Director of Highways Ellis L. Armstrong and Chief Engineer Robert W. Griffin. Utah had already opened bids on a 2.5 mile project leading towards the damsite, but since the low bid exceeded the engineers estimate by about 25 per cent, all bids were rejected. The project was extended to 4.4 miles total length and is now being advertised with bids being opened on July 1. in 1957 WASHINGTON, D. C.- -A report provocatively entitled Japan Buys American in All 48 States" has just been released by Trade the United States-Japa- n te Council. The Utah-Wyomin- report of charts, summarizes an text and graphs exhaustive survey. The surveys purpose was to estimate how much each of the states shared immediately in the benefits from the $1,221,350,000 worth of commodities exported by the United States to Japan in 12-pa- ge state-by-sta- te -- URBAN ROADS GETTING BIG BOOST: In Utahs big highway program, urban roads are getting their just share of attention from Road Commission engineers. Results of the states construction has been witnessed along Salt Lakes 7th East where the busy, wide new stretch has seen more than 400 increase in its daily use since construction. Several projects will be let this year on this route between 13th South and Draper. To further speed up traffic flow in populous Salt Lake County, the western side of the valley shall see Redwood Road from 9th North to beyond Riverton brought up to high standards with several bid openings to be held in 1958. Hearings are being held during June on the Interstate Route from 24th South and 4th West to the Draper Crossroads. Utahs second city is likewise witnessing much activity. Urban work in Ogden this year by the state will amount to almost $1 million. Logan, home of the Utah State University, will see 4th North from Main Street to the University resurfaced and an additional project on West 2nd North Streeet with bid openings scheduled for June 24. Sanpete County will witness the county seats main street, Manti, resurfaced in a project that will likewise extend to Ephraim. In Sevier County, Redmond residents are watching the resurfacing through their community in a job that reaches into the city limits of Salina. Some other urban jobs are: Springville: d New $300,000 overpass and road toward Mapleton to be this month. Orem: 9th North to 18th South; widen, channelize, resurface. Provo: Project on University Street at 12th North, costing almost $100,000. Heber City: Widening of section leading to Midway. Japan 1957. The report points out that, although Japan is fairly well known as our best customer second only to Canada, not many Americans realize the nature and value of exports to Japan from their own state. Taylor Burton, Road Commission Chairman, has underway a program to get a definite criteria for adding roads to the state system. A committee has been appointed to work out a fixed formula to replace what one reporter termed a legislative reGerald Matthews, Chief Reciprocal system. search Engineer, has come up with a suggested formula the committee will evaluate. It will give weight to such factors as Interstate, state, and county roads either existing or' programmed.
