Show Pare gy- .- ff - m Fish and Game News A new Friday, May 30, 1958 TIIE UTAH STATESMAN 4 in-serv- ice training pro- gram has recently been instituted for Utah Department of of Fish and Game employees, department spokesman said today. The program, primarily directed toward new employees, consists of a months long orientation and training period covering all facets of fish and game work. Highlights of the program include special field assignments with experienced enforcement management technicians and a basic grounding in the operational technique of fish hatcheries and game farms. The training will also include a familiarization with the overall functions of the several management, enforcement and educational divisions of the department. This period of training, spokesmen noted, is designed to better acquaint department employees with the problems associated with management of Utahs vast store of natural resources and at the same time will provide better trained men to better serve the interests of Utahs sporting public. Upward of 170000 anglers will be afield for the Saturday, June 7, opening of the general fishing season in Utah. This annual opener draws a greater number of participants than any other of. the outdoor sports. All major waters and sections of the state, including accessible areas in th erugged high country, are expected to receive first weekend pressures. The department of fish and game said (today that general prospects now point to a good opening weekend, lanting trucks from the states twelve hatcheries are stocking trout into most of the heavier fished waters from one of. the largest supplies of hese fish ever produced at the hatchery installations. Current predictions are for good water conditions in the south half of the state with all lakes and reservoirs full, to capacity. Streams in this area are expected to be somewhat roily. With high water tables prevalent throughout most northern drainages the present heavy runoff has made fish planting in some streams rather hazardous. All of these waters, however, will be planted as soon as they are accessible and conditions permit. Late reports from the high Uinta mountain country indicate that anglers will experience little difficulty in making their way to favorite haunts up to the 10.000 foot level. Water conditions in the area are reported as generally good for fishing. In a final reminder department spokesmen noted that fishing hours are 4:00 a.m. tod 9:00 am. daily, with the close of the 162 day general season set for November 15, 1958. A general survey of water pollution as it may relate to wildlife resoruces will be launched this summer by the Utah Department of Fish and Game. Field work on this ever important aspect of fish and game management will be headed by Marion J. Madsen, former fisheries chief for the department. Direction of the work will be under Fisheries Chief Don And-riaand Acting Chief of Game Management Norman Hancock, as it relates to the various aspects of fish andor game department management, according to Director Harold S. Crane. The annual spawning run of native trout from Strawberry Reservoir got under way last week as the big fish made their way up numerous tributary streams and appeared in holding pens at the states two egg taking stations on Clyde Creek and the Indian Creek spillway. Some 3,000 of these fish are e. suspended in Importance of this annual operation was made clear today as department spokesmen noted the Strawberry native trout egg soure in Utah where native trout take is the foremost primary eggs ran be procured to perpetuate this species in the lake itself and in many other waters over the state. Fishing is the greatest participant sport in the United States. Twenty-on- e million fishermen annually spend upwards of two billion dollars in pursuit of their no mid-Jun- sport. The Public Shooting Grounds in Box Elder Country was established in 1923 as the nations first marsh open to public man-ma- de hunting. Catfish, like their mammal name-sak- e the cat, are most active at night and often go into periods of inactivity during the daylight hours. The channel catfish is indeed a doting father. Immediately after spawning the female is driven from the nest, while the male remains to oversee hatching erf the young. For Your Next PRINTING JOB . . .
