No hunts were scheduled for the taking of either buffalo or moose when management information showed there were Insufficient numbers of these animals to warrant a season this year. Board members authorized the most diversified and liberal deer hunting seasons on record for this big game hunt, when field, public and investigative reports showed the need to harvest more deer from many of the states 62 herd units if the animals are to be kept andor brought into balance with the available range. A special statewide deer season, for archery hunting only will run from August 31 through Sept. 15. This season covers three weekends, including the long three-da- y Labor Day Holiday. Some special permit hunts will begin during late September while regular license seasons will get under way on several prime hunting areas one week earlier than the general season, or October 12. The general season by legislative law must start on Saturday, October 20, or the nearest Saturday to October 20. Thus, the opening date of the general season this year is October 19. The Board set another regulation allowing two special deer permits to each holder of a big game license, providing that only one such permit may be held for any one of the heard units where this type of hunt is scheduled. Other actions taken provide for a variation of the general season from eleven to 37 days in length, for extended weekend hunts, for and give blanket authority to the department of fish and game to hold conditional hunts on five-dnotice if and to remove when needed trespass or problem animals. Spokesman said the full listing of all big game hunts and regulations would be published and available to the public within three to four weeks. Board members are Chairman J. Perry Egan, Lee Warburton, J. Wells Robins, Welby Aagard and William D. Hurst. Late season high water conditions are still limiting the plant-lega- ls in several of the states major streams, the department of fish and game said. The department said this was especially true of the upper Weber and Provo rivers where the heavy runoff from melting snows in the high country continues. Only token plants have been made in these waters to date, with ample fish awaiting to be stocked just as soon as the current hazardous water conlitions change enough to assure a fair return of the plants to the fisherpost-seaso- from Washington Some 425,000 Kokanee salmon money to Washington, and then have been planted in Panguitch, sending it back again, would be Scofild, Deer Creek, Wanship, eliminated. Here is a typical instance where private industry is willing and able to do the job. Yet public power are trying to) prevent them from rendering this service hun-dre- ad-vtoca- ties I by approving Hells Canyon dam. Benefits Few A federal dam would benefit the few at the expense of the many. Hells Canyon supporters want to take our taxes to build a tax-frdam to distribute"7ax-fre- e agenpower through tax-frcies for the particular benefit of one section of the country. They would also deprive the people of Idaho from the property tax resources that would accrue with the building of dams by private industry. Political Issue ee ee Before Hells Canyon became a political issue, it was considered many times on its merit alone. Each time it was defeated and defeated by the votes of many of those who are now supporting it. Last year, Hells Canyon was beaten in the Senate. In the 82nd Congress, the House Interior Committee voted unanimously to table the bill authorizing the project. I am hopeful that we can kill this outrageous proposal one and for all. Humane Slaughter My campaign to require humane slaughter of livestock is getting results. The House Agriculture Committee this week approved legislation which would require the Secretary of Agriculture to set up standards of humane slaughter and require conformance within two and one half years. While I feel that this period should be shortened, the legislation proposed certainly is a long step forward. ns, ay mans creel. The department again reminded anglers that many of the high country waters, including the Uinta Range and the Manti Skyline, are still closed in because of wet roadways andor as yet unmelted snow. They were advised to wait at least another week before planning trips into these areas or to inquire locally concerning conditions before going afield.
