Legislator Answers SaL By DR. ROBERT B. GORDON State Representative Pres. Salt Lake Safety Council Have decided that to the people of Utah must be offered a truthful answer to the misleading statements being circulated regarding the highly controversial efforts to promote a jet bomber practice area on the edgeof Great Salt Lake. Inferences were made to some public officials of this state . . . resorting to several misstatements and national defense being jeopardized because of the selfish and greedy motives of a few local individuals. As a state representative and thus a public servant, I have gone thoroughly into this problem and feel it my duty to speak out against this unfairness as vtrell as to uncover the really serious problem. The barren worthless land or disturbing bird life are minor issues. The real hazard is the bomb run at tremendous speeds (up to possibly 00 miles per hour), including sudden intricate aerial acrobatics with accuracy to complete the practive bomb drop. Coming from a carrier ship off the West Coast, the young pilots must buide their bombers to the target, retrace their run and back to the ship out on the Pacific all nonstop, some of the high speed maneuvers being done on instruments with painstaking attention to the radar screen. Armories at St. George and Tooele recently were completed, bringing to seven the total built since 1953. New armories have been built at Pfcovo, Murray, Vernal, American Fork and Springville. Also under construction at this time are structures at Salt Lake City, Price, Layton and Bountiful. Final plans are complete and federal green lights expected for a second armory at Salt Lake City and others at Smithfield and Lehi. Preliminary plans are awaiting approval for Beaver. Proposed armories for Ogden, Orem and Heber are awaiting federal okeh for drafting of plans. Existing structures held adequate are located at Logan, Garland, Brigham City, Spanish Fork, Nephi, Mt. Pleasant, Fillmore, Cedar City, Richfield and Manti. The $3 million new construction program is provided for by federal funds and local and state money. three-fourt- one-four- hs th crucial part is flown down through, along side of, and just below a busy network of already congested airways used by military aircraft, large commercial airr lines, flying and testing areas, private flights and government - restricted defense areas some of these as close as 30 to 45 seconds flying time away! Space here will not permit telling the serious and very real fiery crash into one of the thickly populated areas actually only minutes from the maneuver area. Having personally studied and compiled these and other documentary facts, I invite anyone to personally contact me for verification or further information. We, local individuals or public officials of this state who have been intimated to be selfish and greedy instead of making misstatements, are perhaps making only understatements. That is be cause our minds are too full of tragedies over Grand Canyon, the recent school yard crash and such things as (un) guided missiles over Utah. ' super-bombe- - - Revenue Office Cautions Public on Errors The high percentage of errors in individual Federal income tax returns has prompted the Internal Revenue Service to ask all taxpayers to check and recheck their 1957 returns carefully bo-fore sending them in, Director Charles I. Fox, said today. There is a tendency with many taxpayers, once theyve finished their 1040s, to rush the final stages ' and get the return on its way to us, Mr. Fox said. We are very grateful for early filing, but several thousands taxpayers could save us a lot of trouble and them selves to by pausing long enough to go over their figures once more, just to make doubly sure. Wed like them to extend that recheck to the entries which dont deal with figures, for example, names, signatures and other specific information which the form calls for. To us a return must add up in facts as well as figures. Id like to remind Utah taxpayers that all returns are examined as they are processed. Some errors are so obvious that they turn up at once, others come to light weeks, even months, later later in the more intensive auditing that follows the close of the filing season. Most errors ye discover call interest and sometimes penalties, by the taxpayer. But taxpayers make mistakes that bring about overpayments, too. They get overpayments back automatically, when we find they have erred. THE HOME STRETCH!
