Show Friday. March 1. 1957 THE UTAH STATESMAN Wyoming Salon Favors Fuel Plant Revival Sen. Joseph WASHINGTON OMahoney (D., Wyo.) said Wednesday he plans to ask Congress for an appropriation to resume operations of the synthetic fuels operation plant at Rifle, Colo., which was shut down by the administration two years ago. The Bureau of Mines has been experimenting to perfect an economically feasible process of extracting oil from oil shale. OMahoney told the House Appropriations Committee the whole world is confronted by the tremendous problem of petroleum and liquid fuel. The question therefore arises, he said, since we know that oil is an essential fuel in time of war or preparation for war, whether we are going to permit the United States to lose its place as the leader of the world in the production of oil. He said the United States has known natural petroleum reserves which are estimated to be sufficient to last 12 years and the Soviet Union has proven areas that will probably last 21 years and the present proven reserves in the Middle East will last 107 years. OMahoney added that in the shale oil deposits in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah we have recoverable oil greater in volume by the most modest estimate than the entire proven resources of Saudia Arabia. What are we going to do about this tremendous resources of shale in the United States, and of coal, too? he said. In 1934 it had a fixed value of $20.67 an ounce. Since then, the value has risen to $35 an ounce- - In 1933 U.S. mines produced 2,556,246 ouces of gold valued at $52,842,300.
