February 15, 1955 It begs the question to scold about the size of our Federal who a determining majority of us government. It was we called upon it to grow, in response to increasing circumstances. For better or for worse, we did not retreat from depression, from war or threat of war. It was we who sanctioned tremendous undertakings. It was we who commanded the Federal government to assume obligations we had formerly handled as individuals or as local communities. It was we who fancied Uncle Sam as world policeman, no less than as local constable. There was danger, there was challenge, there was opportunity. We lumped or trailed them together as Destiny and ordered the response along with it. Big Government is nobodys baby but ours. And our government will continue to grow as more and more of us make ourselves dependent upon its growth. Conversely, it will shrink and demand less from our pocketbooks when we as a people demand less service from it. Either way, it is we the American people who have the final word to speak. It also begs the question to moan about waste and corruption in high places. These are the dangers and costs of bigness. As taxpayers we As voters we have a way of dealing with them can only cry over spilled milk. Taxes may hurt us as individuals especially as we isolate ourselves from our race. Only as strangers to the American do we feel a strangers hand in our pocket. But as we creatively, as we always can and must participate in America and are aware in our hearts of our intimate and dynamic participation, the hand of the tax collector is felt to be our own. Uncle Sam is but a symbol of the service we must forever render unto ourselves and each other. Only from such a premise can we reach the Big Settlement we somehow must make. We cannot escape from ourselves. The bills we run up wc alone can and must pay. t, E.
