The general idea was that 1, having made every dumb possible move, could point them in the right direction economically. I was introduced as a success in the business community and they, of course, wanted to know how they could I A thought from our house In the mods . 5805 South State PO Box 7457 Murray. The first wave of panic hit on the afternoon of the day of the meeting when I realized I had no philosophy. There I was, scheduled to talk about a philosophy I didnt have. So I called a friend whom I admire. Told him my problem and asked if he would mind my borrowing his philosophy for the evening. Youre welcome to it, he said, but its never made me any money. Old cliches like early to bed, early to rise didnt seem to do the trick either. Nor did the fact that Rod Carew got on the cover of Time magazine by only getting a hit about four out of every 10 times seem particuarly relevant. As the time for our meeting grew close, I was forced to get more serious. Thousands of books have been ivritten on the subject but I had to admit I really didnt know what separated successful people from the rest. Nor was I sure what success even was. I work hard from Some morning to evening every week-daof my friends in Park City are bums of sorts and ski every day. 1 dream of skiiing every day. Who is successful? But taking the popular definition of success, I do believe there are certain qualities that the successful people have. The first is that of being honest. I dont care how greedy a person is. Whatever they want, they are far more likely to get it if they are as close to being perfectly honest as possible. There are only a few hours in each day. So much time can be saved if people can trust your word. And people will only learn to trust you if time and time again your word turns out to be good. - 5 i ... y. Being honest isnt enough. A person must also have the ability to make a decision. At some point during the life of an opportunity, it is time to stop investigating and time to act. I know so many people who ask for endless reports while never making a decision. They end up losing the game by default. Its a dangerous quality, but they probably end up in better shape than people who act too quickly. Another quality the best people seem to possess is an intense curiosity. So many individuals get started in one area and never notice what is going on in the rest of the world. New industries and opportunities emerge every year and they are oblivious to them. Let me say, however, as with the case of the person who acts too quickly, the person who makes too many switches will probably be worse off than the man or woman with tunnel vision. I must also say I have a preference for optimistic people. Learn something from your mistakes, but dont learn too much. The real lasting damage of the Great Depression was a belief that prudent people should never take chances. People tend to assume that whatever has happened will continue to happen. Dont be absolutely sure that land will never go down or that stocks will never go up. Another quality successful people seem to have is knowing their own limitations. If you arc good at sales but hate details, try to associate with good detail people. Associate, if you can, with partners who arc smarter than you arc. And finally be lucky. Nothing beats actually finding oil under the ground after you decide to drill. Also, dont believe cvcrthing you were told in college. - i 1 i r - : 5 , 4 V I 6 |
