On Friday, the Dow Industrials bumped up against 986 and then closer lower for the day. Unless some surprising good news is announced, a correction of about 30 points on the Dow is likely. Expect it before the end of the year. Then, higher prices are most probably in January and February. The bear spread in Tandy of long Jan 35 and short Jan 30 should be closed out now. On Friday, a profit of 78 was generated. Tandy was also a good arbitrage situation on Friday. During most of the day the Tandy Jan 30s could be bought at 14 under intrinsic value. By exercising and selling the stock a profit of 14 less commissions was generated. The oil stocks have been performing well the past month. One stock worthy of consideration in this group is Tesoro Petroleum. The stock paid a dividend of $1 per year and earnings appear on an uptrend. Estimated earnings for 1977 are $3.50 per share. TRI-LEV- EL Building Department To Assess Fire Code Salt Lake Citys proposed fire protection code modification is under continued study. Rather than decide whether to adopt smoke detectors as an alternate form of fire protection for existing residential buildings, city commissioners have voted to study the situation further. According to Bud Scarlet, supervising building official, the Department of Building and Housing Services has been instructed to survey all apartment buildings and hotels to determine how many are complying with present building codes. The department is also expected to determine how much it would cost those not currently complying to adhere to the present code, as opposed to a code including smoke detectors as an alternative. The alternative was presented to commissioners durings a public hearing Dec. 8. During the hearing representatives from groups of apartment house owners and the fire protection industry argued whether smoke detectors provide adequate warning to residents during a fire hazard. Proponents of the code modification argued the alternative is the only practical and economical way to force owners not presently complying with the code to provide protection to residents. Results of the survey are due before the Commission within one month.
