Nominations can be made either from the floor or, preferably, mailed in advance to Nominating Committtee, Farm Bureau Womens Committee, 5300 South 360 West, Salt Lake Citv, Utah 84107. The Salt Lake Hilton hotel will be the convention site op November 1975. We urge every county to select their women delegates now so they can make necessary arrangements to attend the convention. At the same convention the By Pamela Turner State Womens Committee Chairman Utah Farm Bureau Federation provide that each county shall be entitled to appoint women delegates equal in number to the official county delegates to the stale convention. Those women delegates meet at the convention to select bv secret ballot a woman to be nominated to the House of Delegates for appointment as chairman of women's committee. T his includes her serving on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors for a two-yeperiod. These county women delegates are not in place of the official county delegates to the convention. If desired by the county, women could serve in both capacities. For example, a county having four delegates may choose to send the county president, young farmers and ranchers chairman and women's chairman as official county delegates. The womens chairman could also serve as women's delegate, along with three other women. The women delegates will be responsible for attending the women's caucus. At this time a report of the past years activities will be given, then the delegates will select by secret ballot their nominee for state chairman of the womens committee. All women in the state are welcome and in fact urged to attend this caucus. However, only delegates will be allowed to vote. In 1974 the delegates totaled 134. Because of our membership increase, our numbers should be greater than that this year. It has been said by some that Farm Bureau leadership is cut and dried. Utah property taxes climbing; state may lose low-ta- x status C Booth Wallentine Executive Vice President Utah Farm Bureau Federation By property tax increases is being violated by 1975 assessment increases such as the 25 percent valuation increases assessed in Salt Lake county. Similar actions have occured in other counties. With Utah rapidly losing its traditional status as a tax state, two very apparent facts emerge for citizen consideration. Taxpayers may have little control over federal, and perhaps state, spending. But there are great opportunities at the local level for informed, effective citizen action to hold the line or reduce local government expenditures. Several county Farm Bureau local affairs committees have adequately demonstrated that. And secondly, if Utah loses her tax state reputation as a in relation to other states, we will lose one of our most valuable selling points for industrial growth and jobs for our young people. across-the-boa- While the federal government continues to reduce taxes and cause greater inflation, state and local governments are forced to assess higher and higher burdens on taxpayers. Much of the higher state and local tax burden is caused by inflation. In Utah, 1975 was a year of significant tax increases. The impact of state legislative action as well as county tax levies is now becoming apparent. According to the Utah Taxpayers Association, property taxes in Utah will jump $26.2 million this year. And this comes on top of a $28.5 million tax increase package voted by the Utah legislature in 1975. Part of the legislated tax hike was cent sales authorized 6y a tax option increase. And the state individual income tax was increased. In addition, several other tax increases were levied. The property tax increase is the highest on record in Utah. School tax the hikes account for $17.8 million-oincrease. And the UTA says cities and towns will impose an added burden of $1.4 million with counties tacking on an additional $5.2 million in 1975. There are no estimates available yet on the cost next year for the significant wage and salary settlements negotiated on the eve of the current school year with teachers. With school finance taxes accounting for the major part of the property tax increase, taxpayers were given a measure of protection by the legislature Vr by limiting school tax increases to 6 over the previous years levy. But this technically applies for only one year. County tax levies are now in the second year following the new assessment law.
