Extension Editor Utah State University An imposing view A test kit designed to let an alfalfa grower know whether the particular insecticide he plans to use will be effective against the weevil on his farm has been developed at Utah State University. It is available on a test basis for Utah farmers, according to Dr. William A. (Bill) Brindley, associate professor of biology at U.S.U. Simple to use, the kit can be especially helpful because the weevil in one field may be resistant to one type of pesticide, while those in a field a mile away might be controlled with that chemical. I would like some growers to try out the alfalfa weevil test kit we are developing at Utah State University. All of the development so far has been on a research basis. We need some field experience with it. Dr. Brindley said Page 3 D. D. McKay would be a proud man today to stand on the overpass at Interstate 15 and 5300 South in companies, that some years ago located the choice property on which the building stands. Elmo Hamilton, the current president of UFBF. gave leadership to the project, and also had the privilege of serving on the building committee with Messrs. Hamilton and Carroll. But the entire project had full support from members of your board of directors now serving and some who served earlier. The scientist explained that a grower planning to treat with one of these insecticides can use a kit of five vials to see how effective that insecticide will be. The procedure is fairly simple. Make several sweeps with the net to catch the weevil, put five larvae or adults depending on which you are trying to control at that time in each of the five vials. Place the vials in a dark room at room temperature overnight. Look to sec if they are dead the next day. Any growers that are planning to spray their alfalfa for weevil control this summer and would be willing to use the test kit without cost are encouraged to contact Dr. Brindley.
