Farm Bureau hired Leo J. Shapiro and Associates to survey consumers to find out what they thought about farmers. In summary, Shapiro found that the vast majority of Americans feel kindly towards farmers. Very few blamed farmers for Tising food prices. Significantly, most consumers said they strongly favor retaining the family farm system we have in this country. So it's hard to reconcile that clear-cattitude with the growing drive by labor unions to bring agri- CARPENTER FARM EQUIPMENT 330 6400 SOUTH MURRAY, UTAH 84107 EAST PHONE 268-333- 1 AUTHORIZED $( Dutchman, DISTRIBUTOR ut culture under unemployment compensation. The big nonfamily corporate farm can probably wade through the myriad of forms and reports now required by a long list of government agencies. But the family farmer has about all he can do to plant and harvest his crops. Getting mired dowm in a barnful of government forms is just the beginning. The economics of bringing agriculture under unemployment compensation coverage are staggering. Most state unemployment compensation laws require employers of each group of covered workers to pay enough premium to cover the costs of paying out the compensation. It is almost certain that any federal law would have such a re- With the purchase of the following bronze Rain Bird impact drive sprinklers, E. C. And it's hard to argue against that concept. Imagine how staggering the farmers tax unemployment would have to be to support the migrant and temporary work force that finds work in agriculture during Wallentine part of the year. Many, many farm workers are high school or college students, members of farm families working on a neighbors farm, retired people, housewives and others who are not a regular part of the nations hired work force. Most states, after studying the pros and cons of including farm workers in unemployment compen- programs , have decided against it. But some Congressmen keep trying to pass a federal law to replace the wisdom of the states with the wisdom of Washington, D.C. Unemployment compensation is another cost and another administrative headache American agriculture sation can do without.
