The umbrella policy accomplishes these three purposes: 1. It provides an excess limit of underlying liability over the insurance or what you now carry at required limits. This extra coverage ranges from $1 million to $5 million at a reasonable premium. You must keep your underlying insurance in force, however. 2. This policy is much broader in many respects and covers exposures that were previously not covered or that were excluded. For example, most policies do not cover personal injury claims such as libel or slander, nor do they cover false arrest, wrongful eviction, malicious presecution or defamation of character, to mention a few. The umbrella then becomes primary insurance subject to a deductible or net retention. An important feature is the defense coverage where there is no underlying insurance. This should be important as you consider buying this valuable protection. Can you really afford an attorneys defense cost for a $1 million lawsuit? Our deductible can range from $250 to $10,000, depending on the circumstances. 3. The police provides replacement coverage for underlying liability policies which are reduced or exhausted by so-call- first-doll- ed ar loss. The coverage extends to both per-nal injury (bodily injury) and prop-rt- y damage. (Automobile cases have prodi ceil verdicts in the hundreds of thou mils of dollars.) his article gives a general overview of a very much needed type of protection. I suggest you discuss coverage with your insurance agent. |
