Show Birthday To Be Noted By Ephs Oldest a y rye v z ANDREW HANSEN Andrew Hansen Hanson Ephraim's oldest citizen will observe his birthday anniversary Feb 16 No special events a are r e planned for the occasion Mr Hansen has been one one of the community's most prominent prominent pro pro- citizens and was asked to give an account of some of his public activities Hedi He di did so o. o as follows I have worked days months and nd years for the benefit of Ephraim I served 14 to 16 years ears in the city council under un un- der five different mayors Andrew is t the h e one left of the five I was appointed by the city J council to look after the wa water wat wa wa- t ter r lout out of Ephraim Canyon and and looked after the interest of Ephraim farmers in such matters as the Horseshoe Tunnel Tunnel Tunnel Tun Tun- nel and Chris Larsen canal I helped to install all all' the dividers in the Ephraim creek with the head Jorgen Jorgenson When Ephraim ran short of drinking and culinary water we went up New Canyon looking looking looking look look- ing for more We found two small springs and they planned planned planned plan plan- ned to pipe them down I Isaid Isaid Isaid said that was what Ephraim had been going to do for years but never got it done I said Come and go with me and see a big spring near the top of the mountain They said they had never heard of or seen that spring so we turned around and I took t them em to see ee Big Spring Seeing such a spring they fell in love with it right away so arrangements were made to have that spring piped down and connect it with the theether theether theother ether other water I 1 got the contract with three other Ephraim boys to put the project over I hauled all the pipe up and strung ii it along a line making my own road through the timber and brush I helped dig the trench and lay the pipe and we have had plenty of culinary and sprinkling water ever since When the Ephraim Irrigation Irrigation Irrigation tion Company was formed I Iwas Iwas Iwas was chosen as one of the directors di directors directors di- di rectors and asked the president president president dent to get started on the tunnel He said zaid yes but never never never nev nev- er started So they put me in jn president and I with t the h e board members started to investigate investigate in- in within ten days I went to E. O Larsen reclamation reclamation reclamation mation engineer in Provo and he said Ill help you all I Ican Ican Ican can but go to the water commission commission commission com com- mission in Salt L' L Lake k I went and told them what I wanted One man said We cant can't bo bother bother bo- bo ther with small projects like that but another said Small fish must be fed as well as large fish We just listen to what this man man wants So they decided to send a adel del delegation e gat ion to investigate Three Three- of them came out and andI I took them to the top of the mountain I had P. P P C. C Peterson with me and we showed them the project along along along a- a long the top of the mountain They said it looked like like- a good thing to get more water so they reported to the commission commission commission com com- mission in Salt Lake City and they hey agreed to help us with the project W We had it surveyed a and n d dready ready to start and they had boys build three or four miles of canal for us without cost to the f farmers Then all was ready to start the tunnel and we had a great excursion to the site the day work was to start A. A W. W Jensen made madea a 3 great speech and they had me set off the first two dynamite dynamite dynamite dyna dyna- mite blasts to start the tunnel tunnel tunnel tun tun- nel work They started to dig from both ends and when they met they phoned down to me Chris Beck who waS waff marshal at the time shot the old City cannon first and I shot it the second time Then we yve decided to have a big banquet for the farmers Joe Nielson Mormon Preacher donated a big beef for the occasion He didn't own any Cottonwood water but got a lot of overflow on his grass land The City Council appointed a man to go up and get a big Christmas tree Iree Dave Madsen Madsen Madsen Mad- Mad sen wanted to get rid of some of cf the evergreens down by his place so I said Why not move one of them up to the Post O Office fic corner Andy Thomson mId and I dug it it up and andI I planted and took care of it the first year It If grew grew and never had a dry twig on it nd d it has been decorated each Christmas ever since 1 am also responsible for the thee e evergreens in the Pioneer Cemetery by having the City Council go up the canyon dig the trees up and move them down I had the contract to put in the new for culinary culinary culinary cul cul- inary water storage I was was captain captain- of the grasshopper grasshopper grass grass- hopper opper drive for two years when all ll the props crops were saved aved Mrs Peter and andI I took care of the old peoples people's p parties for two years We h had hada d P a big banquet and then took the old people for a ride to the Manti ManU Temple Tempie and back to a free show how I was a board member and president of of or the Ephraim Irrigation Ir Irrigation Irrigation Ir- Ir Co for 14 years or more and we made many trips to Provo Salt Lake City Ogden Ogden Ogden Og- Og den Emery County and up the canyon all free gratis 1 made a proposition to c cut t tour our own W wages ten percent and I could explain a lot more about bout each irrigation water project t but haven't the space to d do so |
