BERRY GRAHAM CRACKER DESSERT By Pamela Turner 18 State Womens graham crackers 14 cup sugar 14 cup melted butter 12 cup milk 12 lb marshmallows Committee Chairman cup whipping cream pint sweetened berries (fresh or frozen raspberries or strawberries) 12 cup sliced nuts 1 1 When we outlined our years activities way back in January, it seemed that we had forever to accomplish these tasks. For many of us, the harvest is being gathered and an accounting' must be made. Before long many counties will have their annual conventions, and it would be well to realistically appraise the efforts of our Farm Bureau Womens committees efforts. Many counties have traditional' activities aside from those suggested by the state. We commend you for continuing with these. In the activities suggested by the state, how does your county rate? For example: Is your county womens committee or- -. ganized? Are you participating in political education and activities? Does every mailbox in your county have a name on it? Have you had a ivorkshop in your county or district? Have you investigated textbooks used in your local schools? Do you have a farm safety program? Has your committee participated in consumer education, local affairs or U.S. farm exports county fairs? Have you laid the groundwork for your county essay contest? We hope that your answer to most of these questions is yes, and that each of you will enthusiastically seek to help those responsible for the activities. Agricultural trade contributed a net surplus of SI 1.8 billion to the nation's international trade account. Commenting on the record increase. Acting Secretary of Agriculture J. Phil Campbell said that the contribution of American agriculture to the U.S. balance of trade is enormously important. Instead, the U.S. trade balance ended up about S2.8 billion on the positive side." U.S. agricultural imports in the 12 months ended June 30 totaled $9.5 billion compared to the export figure of S2I.3 billion. We feel that your projects should fill needs within your specific area, and especially that projects should promote the ideas that agriculture and farming are great. A city dweller, recently moved to a rural area, decided one morning to remove a large tree from his back yard, so he purchased a chain saw and commenced work. He had struggled with it for some time when an old friend came to visit. Upon learning of the problem at hand, the friend volunteered his assistance. He picked up the chain saw, and together, the two continued working on the massive, defiant tree. About noon the two men sank down to the 'ground to rest, weary from their mornings labors. Just then a neighboring farmer stopped by and, upon seeing the exhausted men sitting on the ground, asked what they were doing. They explained the problem. The farmer offered his assistance, picked up the chain saw, and pulled the cord. The two men leaped from the ground, jumped back and exclaimed, Whats that noise?! ! We, as Farm Bureau women, like the farmer in the story, often have knowledge we need to share with others. We hope that as you meet in your county business meetings, your womens committee will have a good report on its activities.
