The week will be July 1 and focus on the need for personal protective equipment in agriculture such as safety hats, shoes 25-3- and glasses. Pesticide Sill Passes The Congress has passed new pesticide legislation which is of interest to all persons who apply pesticides either on the farm or around the home. Major provisions of the bill that applies to farmers and homeowners have to do with the reading of the label and the classification of pesticides. All pesticides will be classified for general use or restricted use. Those classified as general can be used by anyone, but they must be used only according to the amounts and places specified on the label. Pesticides listed as restricted can be applied only by or under the supervision of certified applicators. A farmer who is using pesticides listed as restricted only on his own farm can qualify as a certified applicator by making application to the appropriate state agency. Those doing custom spraying will have to meet stiffer requirements than a person doing only his own work. States are required to set up appropriate machinery to administer this law. Farm Bureau supported the passage of this legislation over the opposition of conservation groups. These conservation groups wanted much more restrictive laws which would have resulted in the outright banning of many of the pesticides now in use. |
