Con- Vivosum W1 Qmwm The Utah Wool Growers Association met in the Hotel Utah, in Salt Lake City January 12 through the 14th. Sheepmen from around the state met to discuss their problems and make resolutions for the coming year. President Wesley Aagard called the convention to order. After hearing words of welcome from Salt Lake City Commissioner Conrad B. Harrison, Mr. Vern Vivian, President of the National Wool Growers Association addressed the convention goers. Mr. Vivian expressed himself on subjects of interest to the stockmen attending. On product development he said, I feel that we as an' industry have a responsibility to the producer to move into areas of product development. We know that this past year we have been hurt, particularly on the wool side of our- market, because of the synthetic fibers that have gone into the double knit fabrics. I dont say that its the success of the synthetic. I think, it is the success Of the industry that developed the. double knit fabric which was more applicable to the synthetics and so they developed a fabric which excited the imagination of the public and they were able to sell their product and we were sitting back and not developing new We are working with fabrics Texas Tech University at the Textile Research Center there and I am looking forward to some real exciting fabrics in the next year or two, to come out of this. The Wool Act has been a matter of interest and concern to many for - ... years providing income that allowed many growers to remain in the business. Mr. Vivian observed that It was the Wool Act, perhaps, in 1954 it was more or less a subsidy and we were almost guaranteed between 62 and now 72 cents for our wool and this was really not an incentive to do the things that we should have been doing at that time. It certainly gave us a little money in our pocket at that time, but instead of directing some of that towards research maybe it made us a little more complacent and satisfied, so I think we rested on our laurels and what income that brought us and ' if anybody has a better idea we will at a better approach'.but ' accept this point these are the only facts . that are available and after the testimony we were upset.
