Land and water are not the unlimited resources they once were. If we farmers do not recognize the needs of our urban neighbors, the sheer weight of their numbers and demands will override our rights as extent the legislation and planning affect farm decisions. One important function of the regional planning board is to review all federal or state funds that come into the area and make recommendations on how they are spent. At present our local planning board is developing a subdivision ordinance designed to help orderly development in our town, to establish guidelines for the development of shore property, single family dwellings, and commercial developments, and to insure the best and proper use of our natural resources. in- dividuals. Our farm is only 25 miles from Maines second largest city, and our town ' is experiencing the influx of people as this area grows. I have had the privilege, along with several other farmers, to serve on local planning boards and on the Androscoggin Valley Regional Planning Board. We have found from several years experience that our city friends are willing and eager to listen to the farmers viewpoint. The man who spends his working day in the office or shop for eight hours does not realize the extent that decisions made on the farm affect their own lives, or the some of the original settlers in the town of Leeds. Our 250 acre farm borders on the Androscoggin and Dead Rivers and has been in the family for three generations. I feel a responsibility to do what I can to insure that this good river land may continue in agriculture. The general trend is for farm numbers to decline and for our cities to expand. As the urban population grows, so does the demand for land for many uses, of The work of the planning board is primarily to recommend to the local officials guidelines for policies to govern the future use of our natural resources.
