One problem Haddock mentioned was the programs antiquated equipment and he questions whether we are teaching the most modem manufacturing techniques. These technologies include computer-aided design and manufacturing and computer numerical control. Haddock states "When I go through schools like Southern Utah University or Utah Valley State College, that having thriving programs and see the difference, I am deeply concerned. According to one local shop owner, "The machines at the college are mod-- " em enough to teach kids how to do basic machining. What the college has to remember is they are not solely training button pushers, but true skilled machinists, who can figure things out. The machinist that makes the big money in the future will need to have the most basic of machining skills, complemented by computer numerical control machining skills. Lund agrees, the machines in the shop now can be used to prepare students for typical machining scenarios in current industry. But he emphasizes that it would be important to get at least one computer numerical control machine that is cutting-edg- e technology. Haddock discussed that funding is a concern. "We are talking a shortfall (of money) over a period of many years, and to be able to bring that up to the minimum standard of the applied technology accreditation, alone would be an enormous amount of resources. Brigham Young University had the dilemma of modernizing their machine shop to support their manufacturing engineering program. What they did was seek out creative ways of getting new machines. One idea they pursued was , asking a machine dealer or manufac-- . turer to loan them machinery, they in turn, would program these machines and run them. Meanwhile the dealer could bring in potential customers to see the machine operating. The agreement allows the potential customer even bring in their own personnel to test the machine. This arrangement has benefited both BYU and the machinery manufacturer, as a result of creative thinking such as this BYU has a machine shop. In 1995 CEU conducted a formal program review. The review addressed most critical aspects of the program. There was some statistical data concernstate-of-the-- school but did not graduate commented, I was offered an entry-levmachinist job after only three quarters at Utah Technical College. I dropped school and went to work. For IS years now I have never looked back. Lee Morris of UVSC agrees that many machinist trainees seek out related work early in their school careers and drop out of school to go to work as machinists. Many come to school to enhance their careers, because they moved out of other production jobs at a factory, into the machine shop. InCEUs program review there it is brief statement that many students entry-level of the program never seek a degree, but there is no data to support this assertion. Lund states that typical CEU enrollment has been between 10 and IS students each year in the machine shop program. There are also students from the diesel and welding programs that use the shop. Lund explains that Carbon High School has 20 or 25 students that use the shop. Enrollment was a key issue Haddock brought up. He stated that enrollment has been falling for several years. Many current machine shop students are disillusioned about the controversy. Students that were interviewed expressed a bewildering array of rumors about the program. One student even stated that he heard he will be kicked out of school because CEU has no program to continue. These rumors usually are without foundation and. come from the confusion over whether or not the program is going to end. However, administration should use these rumors as a barometer to indicate that this issue needs clarification. Lund made a suggestion to keep the program going. The college could There is also concern in the general machine shop community about this issue. Local machine shop's are hoping that the administration will involve them in the decision-makin- g process as a disposition is decided for this program. In the program review the statistics show that in 1 993-9- 4 one student graduated with an associate's degree from the program: Lund said what happens is that most machine shop students come to school, learn that basics ofthe trade, find a job then quit schoo(before they graduate. In a survey of machinists at various local shopsthis appears to be an accurate ffKwient A machinist, who attended implement a manufacturing technician degree, where students become proficient in welding, drafting and ma- -. chining. Several colleges in Utah have manufacturing technician programs. A manufacturing technician holds a broad range of manufacturing skills and is capable of assisting manufacturing engineers in working out process and procedure problems in the manufacturing field. The spokesman for the Society of Manufacturing Engineers expressed concern over the closure of the program. This seems to be a trend he states, the problem is that machine shop work in this country show no signs of slowing, but delivery times for tooling and manufactured machine shop commodities have increased because of the problems the industry is facing. The lack of skilled machinists is just one these problems.
