Show TEST RUN, Friday, February 24, 1967 Whats In A Name? New personnel on post often question the tendency of the old timers to use duel names for certain areas on the installation. For example, the administrative area may be referred to as either English Village or Easy Area or both, in rapid succession. TO CLEAR up some of this confusion, this article will give some of the background for the changes in area names and will discuss briefly the individuals who are commemorated by the new labels. Ditto, who served in World War I as an infantry officer. He "was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Ceneral Ditto was the first commander of Huntsville Arsenal and subsequently was assistant chief. Chemical Warfare Ser- vice, from 1943 to 1945. EASY AREA became English Village in honor of Brigadier General Paul X. English. General English served in the Mexican bolder campaign in 1916, during World War I and in the Philippines and Panama. He served in the office of the chief. Chemical Warfare Service, early in World War H and was later chief of staff, 7th Service Command, retiring in 1947. Major General Amos A. Fries was memoralized when Fox Area became Fries Park. General Fries served under General Pershing in the Phillipines against the Moros. He was selected by Pershing in 1917 to be gas officer, AEF. He served as chief, Chemical Warfare Service, from 1920-192- 9, when he retired. In the 50s, this area was called Tent City . It was located across the road from the present Carr Facility and was used to house military personnel who were here for special framing. Peter Area was renamed Buchanan Place in honor of Melvin D. Buchanan who served in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1924-195- 0, when he retired. He was employed at Dugway from 1951 until his death, serving with the Security Force. THE AREA and road of Generals Hill was renamed Armi-tag-e Drive in honor of Colonel David Armitage who served in World War II and subsequently with the 15th Air Force. He also served as commanding officer, Edgewood Arsenal; chemical officer, Eighth U. S. Army, in Korea; Second Army at Ft. Meade, Maryland; and retired as commanding officer, Dugway Proving Ground, in 1962. The U. S. Meteorological Team CBR Barracks was renamed Hale Barracks in honor of Colonel Donald II. Hale who served chemical during World War II as warfare tactical instructor and as and chemical officer, Seventh U. S. Army. He commanded Dugway Proving Ground from 1952-195- 3 and was commander erf Chemical Warfare Laboratories when he retired in 1957. The Wherry Housing Area was first contracted by the Federal Housing Administration and then sold to the government Notice that the roofs of most of the homes are not completed as yet. The 5800 Series barracks will Bullene Barracks in Mme honor of Major General Egbert F. Bullene, a 1917 graduate erf the U. S. Naval Academy, who b later that year transferred to the U. S. Army. He commanded the San Jose project in 1944; later became commanding general, Edgewood Arsenal, and was chief chemical officer from 1951 to t l'ix 1954. THE OLD NCO quarter was renamed Renneau Court in honor erf Master Sergeant Charles H. Renneau who served during World War U and was stationed at Deseret Chemical Depot from 1951 until 1958, when he retired. The parade field across from Headquarters building was renamed Brantley Field in honor of Second Lieutenant Robert C. Brantley. Lieutenant Brantley served as a sergeant. Company D, 1st Gas Regiment, in France in September of 1918 and won the nations second highest award -the Distinguished Service Cross. Baker Area was changed to Baker Laboratory in honor of Major General Walter C. Baker who served as a volunteer in the Spanish-AmericWar and as a regular Army officer in World War I. He commanded Edgewood Arsenal and the Chemical Warfare School and was First Corps Area chemical officer until he became chief Chemical Warfare Service, in 1937. Carr Facility is the new name for Charlie Area. It was named in honor of Captain Gordon W. ' Carr who was assigned to Dugway Proving Ground as a test officer and was killed in an airplane crash on April 7, 1964. an This is the old post headquarters building. It was constructed during the latter part of 1943. Colonel Craydon C. Essman was the post commander at that time.
