Show BUNTS AND BOUNCES by PFC Carry Ballard As the basketball season draws to a close in the next few weeks with many tournaments to decide conference, state and national champions, another sport - baseball' - will be making its way into the national limelight. Many of the professional baseball teams have already started spring workouts and, by March 1, rookies and old timers alike will be battling for spots with the major league teams. The popping of leather mitts and the crack of bats can already be heard in Florida and California as some of the players try to get the jump on the rest of the leagues. THERE ARE FIVE active players who have 'their eyes on a good season this summer. The five are Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants, Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees, Eddie Mathews of the Houston Astros, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves and Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs. All five are outstanding stars for their respective teams and hold many records each in the big leagues. But all five of these men are ranked in the top 11 home run bitten in the history of baseball and each will be shooting to climb higher on the list this season. Mays is currently the leading active home run leader with 542 circuit blasts in his career, but rides in second place on the e list behind the immortal Babe Ruth who collected 714 round-trippein his playing days. Mays, who will be beginning his 16th major league season, needs 172 more homers to tie Ruth's record and 173 to break the mark. If he is to do so, he would have to have four more good seasons with a total of 43 homers per year - plus one more homer in one of those seasons. MANTLE IS CURRENTLY RANKED sixth on the all-tilist and second among active players in total home runs. He trails Ruth, Mays, Jimmy Foxx (534), Ted Williams (521) and Mel Oct (511) with a total of 406. Mantle, entering his 17th playing season, should have no trouble (barring injury) in passing Ott and Williams and, with an extremely good year, could pass Foxx also and move into third place on the all-tilist Mathews is tied for eighth on the list with a total s, of 493 as has former Yankee great Lou Gehrig. Mathews, former star for the Braves at Milwaukee and Atlanta, was traded to Houston during the winter and will have a harder park to hit homers (the Astrodome). However, it is conceivable that he could move into fourth place on the all-tilist with an outstanding year - and maybe even third if he outdoes Mantle's performance. Mathews needs VI nomen to surpass the third-plac- e Foxx, while Mantle needs only 39. This will be Mathews' 16th big league season. Former St. Louis Cardinal great Stan Musal is ninth on the list with 463 clouts, followed by Aaron with 442 and Banks with: Dugway Mustangs brought their regional record up to tour wins against five losses by down- ing St. Marks by a 63-5- 1 score Friday, 10 on the winners home court. The Mustangs shot off to a 2 lead in the opening minute . of the contest and were never headed. Freshman Mark Geerling who collected 16 points to lead tne Mustang scorers collected eight in the opening quarter as the winners stretched their lead to 19 to 10 at the end of the first eight minutes. THE LOSERS, led by Lindsay Am oss, cut the Mustang lead to 24 to 20 with four minutes left in the half before the Mustangs hit for four straight points and led by a 30-2- 3 score at half 7-- time. SPECIALIST FOUR JIMMY B. BLACKBURN receives congratulations from Captain Gordon M. Roselle, commanding officer, Headquarten and Headquarters Company, on behalf of the Headquarten and Headquarten Company basketball team number one for winning first place in the post Intramural League. all-tim- rs all-ti- round-tripper- 419. BOTH AARON, beginning his 14th season, and Banks, starthis 15th year, are within reach of Musial this season, but still ing have a long way to go to catch' anyone else. However, both Aaron and Banks are a Utile younger than the other three active players and have a few more playing years left. All baseball fans' eyes will be on Mays during the next few' years, however, as he has a chance to break Ruth's record. Although his age has begun to show in the last couple of years, there is still a lot of spark in the Giants' centerfielder who hit 37 homers last season. Here's betting that, if the San Francisco star can put in five more good years in the majors, he will come near - and possibly break - Ruth's mark. Other active players who have socked plenty of home runs and are almost sure bets to move near the top of the all-tihomer list before their careen end are: Frank Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles with 373 homers in 11 seasons; Rocky Colavito of the Cleveland Indians with 358 homers in 12 seasons; Joe Ad-coof the California Angels with 336 homers in 17 seasons; Harmon Killebrew of the Minnesota Twins with 336' homers in " 13 seasons; and Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers with 279 homers ck in TEST RUN, Friday, February 24, 1967 Dugway Downs St. Marks For Region Victory The 14 seasons. Everybody knows that Babe Ruth's 60 homers in the 1927 and Roger Maris1 61 homers in. the 1961 season are the most round-trippeever hit in one season in major league baseball, but do you know what the fewest homers were to win a batting crown? Well, it was way back in 1915, when Robert Roth won the home run crown with a grand total of seven homers. Roth played with both the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Indians that season in the American League. The fewest homers ever hit in the National League to win a home run title were Cliff Cravath's (Philadelphia) eight back in 1918. rs Basketball players are a different breed.
