Show Dugway Frpving Ground, Friday,' Oct. 21, 1966 Chaplain's Corner THURSDAY, OCT. 20 t ' t. . P.M. 6-- 9 XT by Fr. (MA J) John F..Kenny t. ni ii "and some fell on good ground. . . "' One sees, from time to time, ads for Vic Tanney's gym and or conditioning establishments. Usually, the come-o-n is acompanied by pictures of some man or woman who has recovered a slim or graceful figure in the course of a few months by dint of faithful and persistent following of a strict regimen of dieting and exercise. When one meets with the relatively rare individual who has had the will power to. thus endure, he will commonly hear, in enthusiastic terms, of the other benefits reaped from the discip-- . lines practices: better health, more relaxed feeling, sounder sleep and the general sense of euphoria which only those have a right to enjoy who have made the lnecessary investment. Looking around at the many overweight people, the pauchy, soft and sloppy, physiques, the builds, one cannot help but pity the loss. So many persons would not only look better, they would BE Better if they were to become more aware of and dedicated to the advantages of these goals and the rules which necessarily accompany their pursuits. If this is true of the body (the greatest of God's visible creations), how much true is it of the soul? How many stunted, arid, dried-u-p people there are who simply have never taken the interest in or opened themselves up to the real attractions of progress and growth in the spiritual life! There remains hidden a side to their natures which they do not even seem to suspect (the highest side, of course) and, as a result of their neglect or indifference, the potentialities, the powers, the beauty thereof never succeed in coming into being. How much better we could be if only we turned our minds to even a consideration of the possibility - to the very existence of that order of things to which we are strangers, but wherein a truly human level of life is alone to be found: the realm of truth, of justice, of compassion, of moral beauty, of nobility of soul, of unselfishness, of high dedication and idealism, of love of God and our fellow man. These sublime validities transcend us, not because they are unattainable, but simply because we do not make the required ef-fort to grasp them. And we do not do that because our interest or enthusiasm is not sufficiently intense. And that is so because our knowledge and appreciation of these purposes is either too feeble to motivate us or (as seems to be the case with far too many) it is simHow much better the human race could become ply if its members would only work at it. Our great poet said it: "Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul As the swift seasons roll Leave thy past" Do you have potentialities and powers that are wasting away through misuse or lack of exercise? other body-buildin- g .
