Show Not in MY Job Description! It wu a warm lanquid Friday afternoon, Joe Doe wu ,lhower ft work and a relaxing weekend of golf. Activity in the .hop had .lowed down after that frantic emergency fob that wa. due out Tuesday and finally left Thursday. Joe checked his work order, and aaw that he wa. a. current at could be expected conrideruig the work heaped on his section and the two vacancies they had had since Larry and Sam had transferred to the other shop. Joe had decided to start on the Smedly 'order when his supervisor, Harold Robinson, stuck his head in the door. "Joe, Widget Section has "AAA" Job and I am assigning you the task of priority thisstacking Widgets afternoon." Joe helping Doe was thunder-strucJoe had stacked Widget, before and he knew it wa. a dirty, messy job. In fact, Joe used to be a Widget stacker and a darn good one, but he worked in the Doppler Section now. Joe wa. not going to stack Widgets and no one could make T2fi k. him - it wa. no longer part of his job description. Joe was going to remain firm. Harold, I am working on the Smedly order doing what my job description says I am supposed to da My job description says nothing about stacking Widget, so, I am not going to do What is the matter with Joe's attitude? Perhaps Joe does not know the Army policy on job descriptions outlined in the "Army Personnel Letter," number 4, dated July 1984. jSmployee. sometimes are reluctant - even refuse at times-t- o perform assignments. Such reluctance or refusal is based on an erroneous idea that an employee is not required to perform any duty "that, not fa my job description." Pursuit of this concept may strain supervisor-employrelationships to the point of discipline. Supervisors have full authority to make duty assignments as they see fit within their operation. All such assignments to an employee constitute work the employee is expected to perform. The employee is responsible for carrying out the assigned duties to the best of hi. ability, whether or not such duties are specified in the position description. Jt is neither necessary nor desirable for a position description to set forth every duty an employee may be expected to perform. A position description is adequate if it sets out the principal duties, responsibilities, and supervisory relationships in such a way that die job can be classified by a classifier familiar with the work function. Minor duties performed only occasionally or for a small amount of time need not and should not be included in the position description. It is important that both supervisors and employees understand that it is the job that is classified, not the position description: that the position description does not restrict the assignment of duties of an employee by his supervisor; and that an employee's refusal to perform a reasonable task properly assigned by his supervisor is insubordination and may result in disciplinary action.
