Show Dugway Proving Ground, Friday, Oct. 7, 1966 V Bugway' Fire Department The colorful history of the fire department begins with the birth of the installation in 1942. The District Engineers Auto Repair Shop (Bldg. No. now the Grid Services Building located in Ditto Area, was used to house Dugways only fire truck. The fire department consisted of one Fire Marshall and one noncommissioned officer. IN 1943, a wooden frame fire station, with space available for three fire trucks, was constructed in Ditto Area and was used throughout World War 11. The fire department utilized enlisted men as its crew. These men worked with the department until the termination of the war in 1946. In 1945, a wooden building was completed east of the Air - Operations Building, on the Dug-wa- y Proving Ground Airfield, later named the Michael Army Airfield. The building was disposed of in 1947. During the war, the Army constructed authenic Japanese hnd German buildings on Buchanan Place, near West Camel Back Mountain, and conducted incendiary bombing tests on these structures. The fire department was needed to put out fires as soon as the bombing runs were completed. So, a wooden shelter was constructed approximately one half mile north of the bombing' site to house the fire trucks. AFTER THE war, the number of incendiary bombing tests and Fire Department personnel were reduced. In 1947, care-takewere hired to maintain the Fire Department facilities. Then in 1948, civilian firefighters were employed. After 1948, the Fire Department in Ditto Area was located in Bldg. No. until January 1965, when the masonry building located adjacent to the Michael Army Airfield was completed. The fire department is continuously inspecting buildings and open areas on Dugway, providing air crash rescue service to Michael Army Airfield, operating and maintaining firefighting equipment, presenting fire preventitive methods to the various organizations on over 2500 post, maintaining sprinkler heads, hundreds of different extinguishers and a variety of firefighting equipment, and enrolling members of the force in training schools around the country. The firemen of Dugway are proud men and display their pride in their work. There are over 25 men in the department. Their years of service with the department here total 354 years. This is an average of 15.1 years per man. The Dugway firemen have accumulated over 39,500 hours of sick leave. This is an average of 1,543,5 hours per man. Because the firemen work a week (72 hours on and four days off duty), the rate for accumulating sick leave is 7 hours per payday. Still, this is an impressive record. FIRE departDUGWArS ment has some of the most advanced firefighting equipment available in the United States. The members of the department created a crash truck that is the only one of its kind to be used by the Department of the Army. The Dodge truck combines a Purple K agent, dry chemical unit with a light water unit, the newest agent on the market today. This agent lowers the surface tension of liquid fuels; The vehicle may be operated at foil capacity by only two men. The department also boasts a modified crash truck, ), with a 300 pound unit of Purple K, expelled by dry nitrogen, and, 500 gallons of water with 40 gallons of protein foam concentrate used in conjunction with the water. The force also has a new forcible entry saw 'that will cut a hole into the side, of a plane in a matter of minutes.
