Show La4 . TCST RUN, Dugway Proving Ground, Friday, April 8, 1966 Editorial DGMS Red Cross Helps World Much and April mark the annuel Red Cross fund raising campaign. Its a good time to look back on the facts and figures of the past year's accomplishments. LAST YEAR CAVE the American Red Cross disaster mission it's severest test of the decade. Some $15,651,400 in Red Cross disaster funds were needed to help over 46,000 families during 1965-6(Total expenditures for disaster services including expenditures for foreign disasters amounted to $15,770,800.) a total of 1235 disaster situations, ranging from fires and explosions to floods, tornadoes and hurricanes throughout the United States found volunteers and staff members .ready to help when help was needed. The largest Red Cross mobilization came with Hurricane "Betsy, fire second largest natural disaster in American history. The total tab is expected to finalize at $17 million dollars in emergency and rehabilitation aid to families affected. THE HELPING HAND wu stretched out to the four corners of die world during the past year to assist other Red Cross societies. This help ranged from technical assistance in specific problem areas to food, medicine, drugs and financial assistance when needed. Grand total of this assistance by and through the Red Cross was more than $1.6 million. Relief assistance went to disaster sufferers in 16 countries, including help to victims of floods in Korea and Yugoslavia, earthquakes in Chile and Greece, typhoons in Japan arid the Philippines, and a measle epidemic in Turkey. Traditional work was also carried on in such catastrophes as civil strife. During the conflict in the Dominican Republic, it provided material aid and technical assistance to help the Dominican Red Cross care for the victims. THE AMERICAN Red Croa meets 50 per cent of the annual whole-bloo- d needs of die U.S. The ARC regional blood prothan half of the' country, serving a population cover more grams of 112 million people. Some 2,775,200 donations of blood were made last year through ARC. During the coming year, an estimated one out of every 80 persons in the U.S. will require a blood transfusion. Rapidly moving world events brought Americans into combat in die jungles of Vietnam and found the Red Cross staff and volunteers ready to provide traditional and additional ARC services as needed. MORE THAN 80 highly trained career members, consisting of ARC field directors, their assistants, hospital social and recreational workers, and clubmobile girls are now on the job in that war-tocountry in Southeast Asia. More workers will be sent if the need arises, or the U.S. sends more armed forces personnel. .ARC services to active duty military personnel and their families - including counseling with personal and family problems, assistance with emergency leave situations and emergency financial help - also increased rapidly as American troops pnce more found themselves in a for away land fighting for their country. Some $40 million of die more' than $100 million ARC spends yearly was necessary to carry on these vitally needed services. During the year, nearly 556,000 American servicemen, veterans and their families throughout the world received help at military installations, hospitals or from ARC chapters in their hometowns. AS MORE THAN 51,00 servicemen each month enjoyed recreation programs with a stateside touch, 'conducted by ARC clubmobile girls in Korea, and at ARC Centers in France, Moe rocco and Turkey, new units were established in Vietnam at the urgent request of the U.S. Military Command-an- d Da Nang, Bien Hoa, Tan Son Nhut and other places became familiar names in the operations. And the Red Cross didn't forget the veterans. Volunteers served more than 155,000 patients in Veterans Administration medical facilities in the U.S. Its your Red Cross and it is what you make it. Its a fact. 6. ! m for drinking hand washing and radiator filling. The geode beds are' about 42 miles southwest of the Post over good gravelled roads a large part of the way. Four-whedrive vehicles are not but it's a good idea to required, have extra gas and a spare tire available. There just arent any filling stations along the route. JUST WHAT is a geode? More than 150 years ago, Phillips "Mineralogy" stated that "a geode is a hollow ball of agate (chalcedony) lined with crystals of quartz or amethyst, found at Obentein in Saxony." The definition is still valid up to a point Geodes are found in many other places than Germany, and the United States provides an astonishing variety. They range from tiny pebbles to small boulders. Helm Charies to president ing A field trip to the non restricted geode beds on that date has been arranged by Wilford T. Ivie of Engineer Maintenance, field trip chairman. "GEODE hunting is one of the favorite outdoor activities in the Dugway area, Mr. Ivie said. On this trip we plan to leave from the Craft Shop parking lot promptly at 8 o'clock Saturday morning. We hope for a large crowd. Trip- pets should be adequately prepared and should realize that the trip is a team effort. crystals u Dugway geodes, in contrast to those of Iowa, Oregon, California, Missouri, Kentucky, and elsewhere are often slightly elongated, rath- er than spherical. Their size range is from that of a large marble to an imposing 18 inches across. "YOU WILL notice, Mr. Ivie said, "that Dugway geodes look u if they had been tied with string ir. the manner of an old prospector tieing up his bedroll. Actually, die strings are agatized material, deposited by percolating silica along a convenient pathway. This peculiarity, with the usual blue tinge of the interior, does make the Dugway geode easier to recognize. "If you want to know more about geodes, Mr. Ivie concluded, "there are books available in the Post libraries. Perhaps the best is Quartz Family Minerals by Dake, . Felener, and Wilson, In the Ditto Technical Center library. Gemstones of North America, (Sinkan-kas- ) in the Post library is good. too." The second event of the month for the DGMS will be the presentation of petrified wood slides scheduled for showing at the regular meeting, Wednesday, 20 April at 7:30 p.m. in the Helm home, 302 West School. Everyone interested in rocks and minerals is invited, indeed, is urged to take part in the geode expedition, and to attend the April club session the following Look to a FULL SUMMER... ek. count on Style 3770 SHOE Theres a Williams shoe for everyone and for this neat white leather numevery occasion ber with the trim on the strap and around the throat is as versatile as can be for any hour of the day.
