Thompson, one of five U. S. Atomic Energy Commissioners. But there may be an alternative. The AEC, with industry, is exploring methods of using nuclear explosions deep underground in formations. Dr. Thompson explains that such explosions would break up the rock, thus permitting the leaching of ores and bringing to the surface the metals without the terrible defacement of the land- scape. The AEC Commissioner said: I also believe we can add more and more natural resources to our reserves by this method, including the addition of gas by explosive stimulation of tightly packed formations and of shale oil by retorting underground in cavities created by nuclear explosions. i ore-beari- The National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 calls for the widest range of beneficial uses of, the environ- ment without degradation, risk to health or safety, or other undesirable and unintended consequences. It also calls for achievement of a balance between population and resource use which will permit high standards of living and wide sharing of lifes amenities. HoW else are we to get at the resources locked deep in the bowels of the earth? asks Dr. Thompson. Under- ground recovery through the use of peaceful nuclear explosives appears to be a good answer.
