That's exactly what happened as Richmond eagerly awaits the arrival of cattle breeders and tourists from eleven Western States, May 19. 20 and 21, 1977. The Black and White Days has become famous for the top quality cattle that it has in its shows. Not so in the the Junior Division and Little Buckaroo Rodeo during show. the three-daMany have found that quite a few of the children beginning when the cattlemen of that day would indiscriminately bring their stock together. It was a matter of all quantity rather thiin quality. The owners brought their cattle to a large inclosure where they placed their cattle in small yards within the indnsure. Judges would then walk from yard to yard pointing out the better individuals among the groups. The cows and bulls were not y born to the farms and ranches have broken away, when they're old enough, to try their luck in some other field of endeavor, yet a majority of those are beginning to realize the importance of the farm industry and come back to it. A tragic plane crash on a Southern California mountainside took the lives of Smilhfield resident Spencer Roper and six traveling companions, including the pilot, last Friday afternoon as thev were returning to Logan following a trip to the National Truck Show in Los Angeles. . The Twin-engiCessna 411, owned by E.A. Miller and Sons Packing Co.. Inc., Hyrum, was found Saturday on a rocky mountainside approximately five miles east of Lake Arrowhead. California. There were no survivors of the crash. The other six victims of the crash were identified as Ernest Miller. Hyrum, Jerry Gerstner, 39, Paradise, Rees Bingham. 30, Hyrum. Spencer Roper of 295 East 50 North. Smithfield was born Spencer P. Roper Oct. 3. 1941 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Howard B. and Leone Pond Roper. He married Smithfield native Sheryl Ann Johnson on July 10, 1965 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He was an Elder in the Smithfield 7th Ward and was active in scouting. He had also fulfilled an LDS Mission to the Southern States and had attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. He had been employed as a truck driver for the Miller Packing Co. in Hyrum for the past eight and a half years. Surviving are his widow, Sheryl Ann, one son, Gregory J. and two daughters, Lori Ann, and Lisa Marie, all of Smithfield. Also surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Roper and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Letho Pond, all of Salt Lake City; one brother, Sheldon Roper, Salt Lake City, and one sister, Mrs. James Herron, Grace, Idaho. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 6 in the Smithfield Stake Center by Bishop Duane A. Barker. Interment was at the Smithfield City Cemetery. Spelling Bee Winners Named in Schools d. Days. The show has become one of the largest in the United States and will have participants from the eleven Western states. READ-a-tho- n There are approximately 7.200 students currently participating in the Multiple Sr Ierosis READ-a-tho- n program from Cache Valley, it was announced recently by Carolyn Hunter, Utah State READ-a-tho- n chairman. The program is slated to end April 15. She went on to say that although the majority of the students participating are coming from the Cache County School District there are a few students from the Logan School District reading on their own. The Cache District gave official sanction of the program and afforded the representatives opportunity READ-a-tho- n to go into the schools for volunteers. Librarians in the area have noticed a rise in the number of children reading hooks in the libraries and credits the READ-a-tho- program for the sudden terest in reading. in- Its been noted by Mrs. Hunter that the program has locn very well received in the area and that it is accomplishing much more than just encouraging children to read.
