City; Thompson of Clarkston. w e. d, , Statehood Days Ceremonies According to word received by the Historical Heritage Society of Smithfield, Statehood Day Ceremonies have been scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 1977 at 7:00 p.m. in the St. George Tabernacle. Leonard J. Arrington, LDS Church Historian, will deliver the Statehood Day ad-- Since 1977 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Brigham Young, Dr. Arring ton will reflect on the life of Utah's first governor. The program is free and open to the general public. A chartered bus has been scheduled to leave the Historical Society in Salt Lake City for St. George at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4. Walking tours of St. George have been scheduled for Society visiting several historic sites in Dixie along the way. Statehood Day The bus will return to Salt Lake City on Wednesday, Historical Heritage Society of Smithfield. Members that afternoon. are Utah State Historical Society, Dixie College, Utah State University, and National Endowment for the Humanities. This day was Claus program. A crowd of ward members and visitors enjoyed this fun with a program presented with some of the dance students of Delia Rigby doing some special numbers. Floyd Salisbury gave a reading and then the congregation was led in singing Christmas carols by Floyd also. Santa arrived to greet all the boys and girls and a gift of goodies was presented to all the children and many pictures were taken by .the parents of the children sitting on Santa's lap. Ann Sutherland, daughter of Gordon and Leda Sutherland arrived home by plane on Thursday evening for the holidays from Alexandria, Virginia, where she is employed in Washington, D.C. She will be spending the next two weeks with family members before returning back to her employment in Washington, D.C. Bill Rigby of Newton returned home from the Logan hospital after receiving emergency medical care. DEC. 197S - THE CITIZEN 30, Elda Hillyard Receives Service Award V. Allen Olson. Logan resident and long-tim- e agricultural leader in Utah, has been named male Distin-quishe- Service Award d win- ner for 1976 by the'l't'd Farm Bureau Federation. Elda (Mrs. Melvin) Hillyard has received the female award. The two were honored at the recent UFBF annual convention in Salt Lake City. Olson served on the state Farm Bureau staff for 20 years, climaxing his career as state executive secretary from January 1966 through December 1972. Before joining the staff in 1953, he served as the Cache Farm of Smithfield Bureau's secretary and president and as a member of the state Farm Bureau board of directors and its executive committee. He farmed in Cache county and lives in retirement there now. ' After his retirement, Olsen researched and authorized a UFBF history, As Farmers Forward Go." The distinguished service award recipient spent more th::.i 32 years in high leader in the LDS ship rhu.Lii, including the offices of bishop, counsellor in stake presidencies, and stake high counsellor. Olsen has served two missions, the first to Czechoslovakia as a young man and the other with his wife, the former Bernice Bpiley of Cache county, in Georgia in sins 1975-7- 6. Mrs. Hillyard has spent 22 years in local, county and state Farm Bureau work. She was a member of the FB state Womens committee for 12 years, until this year. She grew up on a vegetable and berry farm in Hyrum, Utah, and has helped her husband Melvin raise hay, grain and beets and milk dairy cows on their Amalga farm. Service in church and community affairs, keeping a beautiful yard up, and working at an outside job from time to time have kept Mrs. Hillyard busy over the years, added to her family, and volunteer work. She has been a leader in several LDS church auxiliaries. . Christmas Day dinner was enjoyed by the Norvel and Dody Jones family of Newton. This special occasion was enjoyed by family members, Karren, Mary Ellen, Brenda, and Dianne. On Christmas Eve the family of Royden Benson held their Christmas gathering and enjoyed a pleasant evening of a , dinner, and visiting, also a family program and canning to different homes.
