At approximately the same time five Indians were persuading their chief to leave the home of Bishop Smith where he was being held on a charge of stealing a horse. Although the hone was being guarded the chief attempted to leave the cabin with the braves. ' Hie guard called, "Halt, and a shot rang out killing the chief. The guard was also killed and men from the settlement pursued the Indians into the canyon where they came upon two men from Franklin, Idaho. They killed one and wounded the other. Still running up the canyon they came upon the Merrill brothers. They killed Ira and wounded his brother. The men from the community, still in pursuit, stopped running as the Indians had begun ascending the cliffc along the canyon and disappeared. The bowery was used that July 24, not in celebration, but for the mourners attending Ira Merrills funeral. His brothers grave is next to Iras as he died ten years after the shooting. Cemeteries, while they hold a gloomy memory for some, always arouse my curiosity. The history on gravestones alone would fill a large volume. A recent trip to the Smithfield Cemetery brought us gravestone to camera with several historical and significant facts. One large orange stone had engraved on it the births and deaths of someones grandchildren. This marker proved disturbing in many ways since the dates between the births and the deaths were seldom more Qian two years apart. On several graves throughout the resting place were the small, almost hidden in the grass, markers placed above the graves of small children. The mortality rate during those first unsettled years was alarmingly high. . One of the most historic grave stones marking an area was that stone of Ira Merrill. The story revolving around Ira and his brother Solvmann is one of suspense, intrigue and rich with the fullness of time.
