President Spencer W. t Kimball, who has been at the helm of The Church of Jesus Saints Christ of Latter-dafor the past two years, said, Only through good will towrd men can there be peace in the heart." Since the beginning of the world, he said, "the Savior's y PRESIDENT SPENCER W. KIMBALL DISCUSSES PEACE program has been that man- kind should love one another and work together in harmony and understanding. Christ is the hope of the world because only through Him can one be saved and exalted in the kingdom. He is the center of our life. He gave us everything we have, the blessing of joy and happiness and peace. "A great peace would be our hope for the world during this Christmas season and throughout the years," he said. coming When asked how peace and good will can be accomplished in the world, he said, We must continue to teach it, and train the children as they grow up and cause them to realize that there is no peace in immorality or in unrighteousness. That is not peace. The aftermath of unrighteousness is disturbance and agony. The basic key to peace is righteousness, which is, of course, related to the matter of loving your neighbor as yourself. If one never commits any crimes against his fellow men. his associates, his friends, then he is going to have peace in his heart and that peace is going to be multiplied by the number of people that possess it until it will have a strong bearing upon the entire world, upon the nations of the world, upon communities and upon the family units." When asked what the Church is doing to help bring about worldwide peace, he referred specifically to the program called "family America, China, Japan, home evening. "We have established what we call a home evening, wherein the father and the mother and all the children gather together at least one evening a week. They sing, they talk to each other, they discuss challenges and read the scriptures," he said. Home evening is universal in the Church, whether in South America or Europe. All over the world our people are gathered in their families one night a week, learning and improving them- selves and their family unity." President Kimball also said that, although the birth of Jesus Christ was important and should be reverently observed, His resurrection was also important. Because He was resurrected from the tomb, we all will be resurrected, he said, referring to the words of the Apostle Paul, For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. So, because of the Savior, whether one is righteous or unrighteous he is sure to be resurrected. But his ultimate reward after the resurrection depends on the way he lives his life here on earth. It is through living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, President Kimball said, that we learn to perfect our lives and to bring them in harmony with the life of our Savior' and of God. His Father. J : I |
