Show THURSDAY. AUG. 14. 1975 FACE 3 PAUL HARVEY NEWS A Hubbard's Packing Co. Of Allegiance Re-Pled- ge PROTECT It will By PALL HARVEY (c) 1975, Los Angele Times What is Am eric an ism? What is our nation's mission, our objective, our purpose? Every nation needs a fixed star to steer by or it is too easily misguided. American troops in enemy hands were asked by their interrogator, What are you for?" The best most could reply was Im against com-- munism." Not good enough. What are we Americans for? Freedom? That wont do. Try to get on an airliner without being searched. Or try to run a business and unions will tell you what to pay; law will dictate whom you hire, and government will decree how much you may charge for your product. So land of the free is nut an apt phrase for enunciating American-ism- . Our nation's Pledge of Allegiance says it pretty well but weve been reciting it without respecting it. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for'all. Vietnam and the defection of draftees demonstrated that we are not indivisible. Groups Attempt To Cut Muskoxen Over Population The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game are trying again to reduce the overpopulation of muskoxen on Nunivak ' Island in Alaska. There is opposition because sport hunting would be one of four ways used to lower the population. The current muskox population is approximately 600. The island can support about 400. The FWS proposes to reduce the population over several years four ways; transplant to other areas in Alaska, donations to zoos and museums, sport hunting, and slaughter of excess animals not removed by other methods. Transplants will not reduce the herd sufficiently because excess animals are mostly old bulls left from earlier transplant operations which removed mainly females. Zoos and museums take very few animals because of the tremendous expense involved in capturing and transporting. Sport hunting and slaughter are the only remaining means to reduce the population. However, sport hunting could take only about 50 animals each year because of logistics and lack of facilities in the one native village on the island. Alaska has authorized a (500 permit for resident sportsmen, and (1,000 permit for nonresidents to take muskoxen. Requests have far outnumbered available No Parking" sign Every restricts your liberty. And surely we are out from under God when crime increases 12 times faster than our population does. Nor is there "justice for all when only 5 per cent of arrested felons are ever brought to trial and only 2 per cent of those go to jail. Meanwhile our streets grow increasingly unsafe for those who obey laws. Our official Pledge of Allegiance refers to the Flag and to "the republic for which it stands. Thats the way it was. In our republic we sought to elect our best men to make decisions in our behalf. Recently, instead, we have tended to defer to the loudest shouters. Government has tended to respond to the demands of pickets, protest- years, aluminum Esamples U.S. CAR, truck and farm equipment. Phone 852 1674 Collect money.
