Show AUGUST THURSDAY, 29. 1974 PAGE 3 Tom Ferguson Continues Quest for Cowboy Crown Tom Ferguson forges ahead in his quest for the 1974 all around championship and a new winnings record, the Rodeo Cowboys Association said. The cowboy from Miami, Okla., was named all around winner Aug. 17 at the Coffeyville, Kan., rodeo, where he won nearly $1,200 in calf roping and steer wrestling. He took first in calf roping for most of the loot after posting a rapid time of 10.0 seconds. His total winnings now are $49,191. He must win a little more than $11,000 to break the winnings record for a single season in rodeo, set last year when Larry Mahan, Dallas, won his sixth all around crown with rodeos ending Aug. $Mi.447. ed MAHAN IIAI) won a little more than $45.(NXi at this point in the season last year. Ferguson has a commanding lead in calf roping, with better than $30,000 in earnings. and he is second in steer wrestling with nearly $18,000. First in the event is Frank Shepperson. Midwest, Wyo., with $19,417. Shepperson is still out of competition with a leg injury sustained last month. Ferguson would wind up setting another record if he wins both the calf roping and steer wrestling championships as well as the all around this year. The competition at Lava Hot Springs each year in early summer. To help promote competitive swimming throughout Idaho, Whitneys association presented Pearce and the Foundation with enough lane ropes to separate all eight racing lanes in the pool. The Lava Hot Springs free form pool is Olympic size. Each racing lane is a full 50 meters (165 feet) long. Franks Lava Hot Springs Presented Christmas came early for Idaho's Lava Hot Springs Foundation swimming facilities. Officials of the Amateur Athletic Union presented the Foundation with approximately $2000 worth of pool lane ropes and named the annual Intermountain AAU Junior Olympic Championship swimming meet after facilities manager C. Kelly Pearce. In a letter to Pearce, Intermountain AAU president Ted Whitney, Salt Lake City, noted that over 7000 young boys and girls have participated in championship meets at the Southeast Idaho aquatic facility the past four years.
