Re: Education Not too far back was a time when we thought education, such as was then available, offered the best way to elevate our professional, cultural, intellectual level. A teacher, and at the very top a university professor, we thought, had the proper leadership aiming at a more prosperous and even happier existence. Surely, we realized that to reach this high goal also took an effort on our part to follow the leader. double. Smithfield next plays Lewiston on June 7 at home. ,,, ,390 Today we have our doubts. To begin with, just accumulating facts similar to what is found in an encyclopedia, we came to believe, is very fragmentary education. It is not the real thing because actual daily living is not in it. Apparently the experience we gather every day is as important, if not more so than knowing hundreds of facts and figures. We discovered that lifes experience over the years had a far greater influence on shaping the person we came to be than anything else. This means that we ourselves had to provide the leadership in the development of our person. We also found that an important requirement for a more or less mature was character guiding person us in our thinking as well as in our actions. The German poet Goethe remarked that silence is needed for the development of character. If Goethe is right, then we in our day do a great deal to prevent the formation of character as we have nurtured the habit of avoiding silence as well-rounde- offered by Leland A. Music and just plain noise seem to satisfy us more. Many even feel embarrassed in perfect silence. In our educational programs the social studies have become very prominent and they led to the vast field of psychology. Motivation and behavior of humans had to be studied and clarified. We read and hear that the time of the family is over. Commune living with all sorts of new and extended freedoms is tending to replace the institution of the family with a past of several hundred generations. The important question is: will these new methods bring greater happiness to humanity or will it just increase more our already ample confusion? Our general observation leads us to believe that in the simple things we find I have no definite elusions, nor new recommendations to make.
