Show , THE SALT LAKE TIMES One of the most highly prized conventions in the U.S., the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, has selected Salt Lake City as the site of their 1980 convention. The S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. is expected to bring 18,000 delegates to Utahs capitol city for a week-lon- g convention and in the process, spend an estimated $9,000,000 on food, lodging, transportation and other retail purchases. The winning of the Societys convention was a combined effort of the Salt ake Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau and the local chapter bid chairman of the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Max Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd and LaMar Williams, Convention Director of the Salt Lake Bureau, made the presentation to the Societys Board in San Francisco late last week. . . Stewart dissuades Howe From Mountain Meeting Concerned that National news media intrusion may convert what was scheduled to be a. private meeting at Democratic Chairman Justin Stewarts cabin ner Sundance, between the Democratic Executive Committee and Congressman Allan Howe into a three ring cicus", Mr. Stewart announced this week that he has dissuaded Congressman Howe from appearing at the mountain cabin meeting on August 7th. ' Envisioning the possible presence of national news media, perhaps including T.V. trailers, Mr. Stewart decided to hold the Executive Committee meeting for members of the Executive Committee The cities bidding for the convention were narrowed to Cleveland and Salt Lake City. The board selected Salt Lake, voting 17 for 4 against during the meeting. .During each convention, members of various quartets from aound the world meet for a variety of competitions including the International Championship Quartet, as well as the Championship Chorus. City residents can expect to be confronted with impromtu street corner concerts by quartets or serenaded in hotel lobbies, at the Salt Palace, or any other unlikely location, Mr. Williams said. The real benefit this king of convention has for Salt Lake is in the sheer number of people attending and the dollars they will spend. We estimate them spending at least $9,000,000 in todays dollars, which means a tax revenue of at least $450,000. This is also the first recognition by a major group of Salt Lake City as a great musica capital. This is by far the largest convention ever booked for Salt Lake City during its history as a Mr. Williams convention dty, said.
