Show Page Four THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1976 200 Years Ago This Week Mobile Solar Laboratory Visits This Week Open for Public Viewing er By Congressman Allan T. Howe Although American forces had failed in their attempt to capture Quebec, Canada in a battle on December 31, 19775, American forces stayed on around Quebec in the hope, a futile hope as it turned out, that they could yet win a military victory and make Canada the 14th Colony." On April 1, 1776, General David Wooster arrived at Quebec with reinforcements and took over command from Benedict Arnold. A series of naval engagements were fought on April 4, 5 and 6, 1776. The USS Columbus, an American frigate easily captured the small British Schooner HMS Hawk on April 4. The Columbus was part of a squadron commanded by Esek Hopkins, which had successfully raided and captured New Privi-denc- e (now Nassau) in the Bahamas on March On April 5, the USS Alfred, another of Hopkins ships, captured the British HMS Bolton. Because most of its guns were designed for land bombardment, the Bolton of3-- 4. fered little resistance. However, the Alfred and four other of Hopkins other Continental ships fared less well on April 6 when they engaged the HMS Glasgow. Hopkins ships encountered Captain Tryingham Howes British frigate off Block Island while on their return from the raid on New Providence. But the lone British Four Most West Offer Vacations Whether you're a city sophisticate or more at home in the great outdoors, theres a vacation adventure awaiting you in the Four Most West. Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah under the Four Most West banner have produced a suitcase full of commissionable package tours to suit every taste. We've designed 11 categories of tours which will appeal to everyone from golfers to river runners, says Brad Smith, director of the Four Corners Regional Tourism Organization. All of the packages include at least two of the Four Most West States." Development of the special package program was funded in part by the Four Corners Regional Com- mission. One category, Unique Adventures of the Four Most West, includes two separate tour packages. Southwest Safari is a personand guided air and ally-piloted land tour of the Four Corners region and The Four Most Cities is a sampler of the culture, cuisine and entertainment available in Denver, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Albuquerque. Safari-goer- s will zip from adventure to adventure in a private plane, flying to remote places the average traveler will never see and in half the time it would take to drive to them. In one week, participants will: Run Utah's rapids, soar over the Grand Canyon at sunrise, see New Mexico's classic volcanoes, jeep through Canyon de Chelly, Arizona and visit the Ana-sacliff dwellings at Mesa Verde. The Four Most Cities is a fly drive tour which offers the best of the West's old and new cultures. Vacationers will taste the heritage of cowboys and Indians, the Spanish and the pioneers, while simultaneously enjoying some of Americas best contemorary theatre, art U, vessel proved more than a match A unique mobile laboratory elab- for the five American ships. Become a watt watcher by knowing 66 how much energy each appliance uses Knowing how much electricity your home appliances consume can help you manage their use more wisely. Electricity usage is measured in kilowatt hours (kwh). One kilowatt hour is 1000 watts of electricity in use for one hour. (Another way to describe it is the amount of electricity consumed by a single 100 watt light bulb burning for 10 hours). In Utah Powers service area, the average cost of one kilowatt hour is less than 34 (among the lowest in the nation). The following chart, prepared by the Edison Electric Institute, lists the approximate amount of electricity consumed by various appliances in normal use for one year. When figuring your electric usage, you need to take into account the size of an appliance and how much you use it. We hope that knowing which appliances use the most electricity will help you become an energy-savin- g watt watcher. Conservation means remembering to use what you need, but need what you use.
