FEBRUARY 13, 1976 County Central Committee Ralph McClure Senator Humphrey Slates Named Chairman Demos Howe for Slated Meeting NACo Committee Appearance Honoring law progress and candidate recruitment, a thorough explanation of the method of electing presidential delegates and a discussion of mass meeting developments will high- light the evening agenda. Then on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Utah State Capitol Rotunda, the party will host a Bicentennial Salute to the Party. Refreshments are planned and admission is free upon purchase of a charity ticket for $1.00. The Sagebrush Club, a Democratic organization, will sponsor the evenings festivities. B. 9, or Phyllis Smurthwaite at Frankel at Saturday Morning, Feb. 21, a series of workshops will be held at the State Capitol. The workshops are designed to help all local politically active persons learn more about political processes and techniques. Topics to be covered g will include publicity and at the local level, new election and registration laws, affirmative action plan implementation, and the organization of mass meetings. One highlight of the workshops will be a guest appearance by Arizona State Democratic Chairman Charlie Pine at a noon lunch in the Capitol Plaza. Pine will speak on organizing voting districts. Activities will get under way on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when the County Democratic Central Committee, chaired by Phyllis Frankel, meets at the Building in the City Commission Chambers. McClure Salt Lake County Commission Ralph McClure, Chairman of the Salt Lake County Commission, has been appointed chairman for urban development of the National Association of Counties (NACo) Com- munity Development ment county legislative goals. These goals are incorporated each year in the American County Platform, NACo's official policy document. The Community Development Steering Committee recommends legislative action on urban and rural development, the financing and planning of public facilities, and housing. In addition, the committee studies building code reform, distribution of population, and the role of each level of government in economic development. According to Webb, the committees main thrust this year will be threefold: To ensure continued county participation in the Housing and Community Development Acto f 1974; and to promote public works and economic development programs. The United Way of the Great Salt Lake Area has achieved its $2.2 million goal, 1975 campaign chairman Louis A. Harris announced. Pledges to date total $2,204,061, an increase of more than 6 over years campaign total of $2,070,000. The funds will help support operations at 57 health and social welfare agencies in Salt Lake, South Davis and Tooele counties. Humphery, the man considered by many political observers as the most likely choice for the Democratic Presidential nomination this year, has scheduled a Salt Lake City appear-- . ance in honor of congressman Allan Howe on Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Salt Palace exhibition hall, it has been announced by the Howe for Congress Committee. Senator Humphrey will be the featured speaker at a fund raising dinner for Congressman Howe, who announced his intention to seek to the Congress from Utah's Second Congressional District on Friday, Feb. 6. Rep. Howe said, I feel singularly honored to have Senator Humphrey, who is one of our most influential and busy national leaders, coming to Utah in my behalf. Ive known Senator Humphrey as a friend for over 15 years and as a colleague in Congress during my first term. I have always been impressed, as I know many others have, by his knowledge and wisdom and his power of expression.
