And it could very well happen again, with an even higher peak, before this summer is over The heaviest use of electricity in the year is, in utility jargon, peak load. It lasts until enough customers turn off air conditioners irrigation pumps, or an assembly line. But its that period of time, UP&Ls president and chief executive officer said, that puts the test to an electric utility. However he said, at UP-&- L Co., we expet to be able to carry these rapidly increasing peak loads if our construction program goes forward as planned, because we have scheduled two additional 415,000 kw units in service by 1978. UP&L has never failed to meet its peak load. Last year, the company had its firm system peak of 1,391,000 kw on July 29 between 2 and 3 p.m. The company strives to maintain a 20 percent reserve capacity Hunter said for circumstances just like jhis unexpectedly high and for use in peak loads case of an emergency, such as Powers generation comes from d plants . . . less than one percent from oil. Seventy steampercent of the generating capacity is located at and most future plants also will be at or near mine mouth. The utility has access to a plentiful supply of coal-fire- coal-fire- d, mine-mout- h, low-sulph- ur low-polluti- ng coal, unlike the Eastern and West Coast utilities that have many high-cos- t, plants or high d units. sulphur oil-fir- ed coal-fire- Another advantage, in addition to being situated near quality coal deposits, the company is strategically located between two major western power pools and in case of emergency, the company can draw on neighbor ing utilities for power. Western art had for decades been considered the stepchild of American Art. Since the Cowboy Halls annual shows for contemporary painters and sculptors began with the first show in 1965, price levels have quadrupled, and there are hundreds of collectors throughout America. The past few years have witnessed not only a renaissance in western art but also in western clothing and Indian arts. Some of the works in the Cowboy Hall of Fame collection, appraised in value at over $250,000' are the late Charlie Dyes oil Joe Through the Aspens; Beelers prize winning bronze, The Navajo Man, and Sharing an Apple and Sixty Yearjs in the Saddle, by Tom Ryan. James Boren, former art director at the Cowboy Hall, has his award winning watercolor, Afternoon in New Mexico, in the show. The famous Montana sculptor Robert Scriver is represented with two bronzes: 4 Oclock in the Morning and Pay Window. Scriver is widely known for his bigger than life size sculpture of rodeo performer Bill Linderman often called King of the Rodeo Cowboys. Two artists who have won the highly coveted National Academy of Western Art competition Prix de West award, are Clark Hulings and Tom Lovell. Both are veteran illustrators as well as fine artists. Hulings won the 1973 competition with oil entitled, Grand Canyon, Kaibab Trail. Lovell won the 1974 National Academy of Western Art completition. Donald Teague considered the dean of American watercolorists is represented in the exhibition with an action night scene, Waiting for Trouble. When not needed, the company serves its interruptible customers from this reserve. Another factor in pushing up the peak load this summer is that some municipalities using Upper ts Colorado River Storage power have needs in excess of their allotment this year, and are purchasing needed energy from UP&L. The utility must build generating and transmission facilities for peak usage, E. A. Hunter explained. In the five years 1970 through 1974, UP&L has spent $408 million for new plants and equipment and has budgeted outlays of $1.38 billion for 1975 through 1979. Much of that projected budget will be used to develop UP&Ls generating capability, based on coal-firesteam-electrfive new plants About 90 percent of Utah d, ic you're involved in an automobile ccident and a power line accidentally tils across your car, should you main in the car?
