Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES U.S.-Polan- d Bi-Late- FRIDAY, JULY 4, 1975 Agreement Signed For the first time the United States and Poland have signed a fishing agreement for the North-easter- n Pacific ocean effective June 15th through December 31, 1975. Under the new agreement Poland has agreed to have not more than 15 vesels licensed to fish in the designated areas of the Northeast Pacific. Of these not more than 11 can fish at any one time. Poland has agreed to change from bottom fishing to pelagic or open sea trawling and to refrain from fishing for salmon and halibut. Furthermore, Poland agred to refrain from fishing in a new closed area off northern California where U.S. fishermen fish with fixed gear so as to prevent damaging the U.S. gear. Another facet of the new agreement allows Polish vessels to conduct support operations, but not fishing within the twelve mile contiguous zone at Forrester Island, Alaska and Destruction Island, Washington. Coast Guard vessels and aircraft will continue to monitor the foreign fishing fleet. All foreign fishing vesels will continue to be boarded by enforcement officers for courtesy inspections and when foreign vessels are believed to have been fishing with gear operated in contract with the bottom. Inspections will also be made for other reasons in the enforcement of U.S. laws and treaties. On May 17, the Coast Guard Cutter Modoc, while on patrol, observed the Polish fishing vessel Kalmar fishing within the 12 mile limit near Santa Cruz. The vessel was boarded seized, and escorted to San Francisco. After being turned over to the U.S. Attorneys office, the case was examined and a large civil penalty levied. bi-late- ral Medicines Can Increase Need For Vitamins that medications Consult clerk of the District Court or the respective signers for further information. It affects more people than heart disease, cancer, blindness, tuberculosis, venereal disease, multiple, sclerosis and kidney disease put together. Hearing loss is Americas largest, least recognized disayet we pay less attenbility tion to it than to any other ailment. While hearing loss afflicts 14,500.000 Americans of all ages including 3,000,000 it is school age children more prevalent among the aged. About half of those needing attention are over 65 and, because people are living longer, deafness among the elderly is growing. Most startling, according to the Better Hearing Institute, is .the fact that some 11.5 mil-- . lion Americans suffer from un-- ; corrected hearing loss when j most could benefit from avail-- i able medical, surgical or amplification help. Even from a "selfish social point of view, more knowledge about hearing problems will help us all. Thats because hearing loss is a costly social problem as well as an intense , ly personal one. It directly costs the nation $410,445,000 annually, for example, just for the education, management and compensation of the hearing impaired, estimated by a recent HEW study. The same study estimates the annual loss of earnings due to communicative disorders at $1,750,000,000! And this does not even begin to account for the unmeasurable cost of human suffering and hardship experienced by the hearing impaired and their families. This needless suffering and waste is a national tragedy. By taking advantage of available hearing help, most hard of hearing people could enjoy lifes precious sounds and be-- : come more productive xnem-- j bers of society. Let us all learn more about: loss and available; hearing hearing help during this Better Hearing Month. If you or someone you know has a hearing problem, do something about it today.
